A great deal of reworking has been done
on the site. Most of what has been done
can't be seen, and is more for my benefit
in helping to make it easier for me to
add new cemeteries, but other things have
been added, hopefully for the benefit
of the entire survey. We have two new
sponsors who we are affiliated with, Ancestry.com
and Genealogy.com
Please visit them to help us keep up with
the costs of transcribing cemeteries,
and paying for web space and other expenses
which come solely out of our pocket which
is rather empty at the moment. If you
plan on subscribing to either or plan
on making a purchase on either of the
sites, please do so by clicking through
one of the links or ads for these two
leaders in genealogy resources. (Was that
a shameless plug or was that shameless
a plug?)
Thanks for all of your support over the
past 9 months!

The Gates
County Historical Society Website
is up and running. Visit the GCHS
web site to find books and other articles
for sale through the Society.

Barbara McMahon, County Coordinator of
the Gates
County GenWeb Project approached me
to take over the site for her since she
was getting too busy to devote a great
deal of time to it. I agreed and have
redesigned, added links, transferred marriage
bonds, death index, and obituaries over
to that site from this one. Everything
will still be accessible from the GCCS
but this site will remain solely for cemetery
transcriptions. Rather than taking from
this site, I intend to make them compliment
each other. On both sites, I am dedicated
to provide you with quality genealogical
content for your research purposes.

I have started adding some recent obituaries
from the Gates County Index and The Virginian-Pilot's
North Carolina section. These aren't old
listings but perhaps someone might find
some useful information in them. Many
of the listings are for people who were
in their 80's and 90's, so parent names
and other family members may help someone
out.

Jim has started spending more time down
at the courthouse since the weather has
been completely unbearable. He has dug
up some marriage bonds and is transcribing
the death index, both of which I have
uploaded to the web. The
death index is just starting alphabetically
so it will take some time before it is
complete. The A's and a partial list of
B's are up on the site now. The few marriage
bonds records he found are up as well.
We hope they are of some use to you because
otherwise Jim's fingers have gone numb
for no reason. :)

Today, in cooperation with the Gates
County S.C.V Camp 2003, the Rawls-Hudgins
cemetery was cleared. You can find the
cemetery on the Rawls-Hudgins page. You
can also view photos of the clean up process.
We greatly appreciate this volunteer,
cooperative effort by the Gates County
S.C.V, Camp 2003 members. To find out
more about your Confederate Veteran ancestor,
please visit their web site. Please note:

I have had several people request that
surnames be indexed to make it easier
to find stones in each cemetery. A surname
index will have the surname with links
to each cemetery with that name listed
in it. I can do this but it will take
some time. At this point I am contemplating
redesigning each of the cemeteries to
make it more obvious which listings are
joint stones or singular ones. Indexing
all of the surnames will take a great
deal of time and energy, and I have a
choice of beginning to redesign the cemetery
pages or beginning to index. I'd like
to have your opinion about which should
be done first. Please e-mail me and voice
your opinion.
Your opinions count.

We have finally made some headway on
the project and are still adding cemeteries
on a regular basis. Jim and I have posted
topographical maps on our hallway wall
and have added push pins to mark known
cemeteries, church cemeteries, and possible
cemeteries. Now that they are clearly
visible it seems as though we will never
finish! The sheer numbers are staggering
and this doesn't even come close to covering
every cemetery in the county.
We plan to advertise around the county
in the fall when we are better able to
handle the load and hopefully those who
know where cemeteries are that cannot
be seen and are not marked on the topographic
maps will let us know where they are.
For now we have our hands full just listing
the known cemeteries. Our agricultural
work is at it's peak at this time of year
and that is making it difficult to get
out there and do this more than in a hit
or miss fashion.
With much confusion and headache I have
finally revamped the site to better handle
the growing information we have on hand.
Please bear with me as it takes a great
deal of time to work out all the bugs
in a redesign but hopefully I can smooth
out all the wrinkles fairly quickly. I
welcome your comments on the new site
and hope that you will take the time to
drop me a line if you see something that
is not working or displaying oddly in
your particular browser.
Once again, thank you all for your support!
