Gilbert Gary Saunders

Gilbert Gary Saunders

Born around the year 1810. Joined the army in Winton, N.C. on June 18, 1861. Joined Company C and I of the 2nd Cavalry. He was dischared in Kinston, N.C. due to a disability of severe hemorhoids aggravated by horseback riding. He was six feet one inch tall, had light complexion, blue eyes, dark hair (later light grey) and was a farmer prior to going in the military. He supposedly was hanged by "The Buffaloes" shortly after coming home from the service. Gilbert was hanged upside down about two miles north of his home after being shot through the head. His wife drove an ox and cart under him, chopped him down to the cart, scraped up the brains coming from his head and brought him back home and buried him.

He is buried in the Sandbanks.
