But
where did they come from and where did they go?
Gates County is thought of as a "gateway"
from the Virginian Colony to points southward.
Most settlers who made their way down the east
coast came through Gates County in the early days.
Some stopped and many didn't, some stayed for
a while before moving on, and some made this their
permanent home. Many of those who settled here
came to present day Gates County to escape religious
persecution in Virginia and they moved southward
because they preferred the "tender mercies
of the Indians to the whippings and brandings
practiced in Virginia". It is for this reason
that both Virginia and North Carolina counties
are important in research of ancestors in Gates
County, since all but the Native Americans originated
from someplace else, and many moved on elsewhere.
The
following links will take you to maps for Virginia
and North Carolina counties. There you will be
able to access the GenWeb pages of other areas
where your ancestors may have come from or those
they may have passed through when they migrated
south of Gates. These maps in turn will let you
click on neighboring states to see their state
GenWeb page. Defunct counties and other GenWeb
sites not related to present day county boundaries
are in large type on the perimeter of the map
close to where they were located.
All
of these links on the maps are off site, so be
sure to bookmark this homepage
so that you can find it easily later on.
