Gates County IndexDec. 19, 2001Jesse L. Harrell A funeral was conducted Sunday in Edenton Baptist Church by Dr. Paul Pridgen and Dr. Kenneth Word. Burial was in Beaver Hill Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Edenton, was in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to Edenton Baptist Church, 200 S. Granville St., Edenton, NC 27932 or to University Health Systems Hospice, Care, PO Box 272, Ahoskie. N.C. 27910. Harrell founded Edenton Furniture Co. in 1946 and retired from the business in 1979. He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of Edenton Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Lena Smith Harrell; a daughter, Linda H. Hobbs of Gatesville; two sons, Phil W. Harrell of Seven Lakes and Ronnie Harrell of Raleigh; a sister, Eleanor H. Partin of Edenton; and nine grandchildren. Philip P. Godwin Sr. He was the widower of Anita Freeman Godwin. A funeral was conducted Saturday in Gatesville Baptist Church by the Rev. Gene Asbill and the Rev. Billy Presley. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Godwin family plot. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or to Gatesville Baptist Church. Godwin was an attorney in the Godwin & Godwin Law Firm. He was a member of Gatesville Baptist Church, he had served as a trustee of Chowan College, a trustee of Wake Forest University and a member of Gatesville Masonic Lodge No. 126. He was an Air Force veteran of World War II and had served in the Pacific Theatre. Survivors include a son, Philip Pittman Godwin Jr. of Gatesville; three brothers, Walter Hayes Godwin Sr. and Francis Marne Godwin, both of Gatesville and Edward Redden Godwin Sr. of Houston, Texas; and two grandchildren. Lucy R. Rogerson Mrs. Rogerson was born in Gates, NC, the daughter of the late William Arthur and Maggie Sue Riddick Russell and was the wife of the late Lloyd E. Rogerson. She was a secretary at the Elizabeth City Hosiery Mill for 30 ½ years and a member of Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church. Mrs. Rogerson is survived by one sister, Mary Ellen Temple of Elizabeth City, NC, one brother, Nathan Canton Russell of Elizabeth City, NC; four nieces, Tebia McKown, Letituc Witcher, Crystal Branham and Bonnie Hobbs; five nephews, C.A. Bogue, James Bogue, Warren Russell, David Russell, and Johnny Harrell; and several great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a sister, Violet E. Bogue and a brother, William "Billy" Russell. Graveside services was conducted Sunday, December 16, 2001, at 2 p.m. in Memory Gardens Cemetery by the Rev. Tony Moore and the Rev. Duane Campbell. The family received friends Saturday, December 15, 2001 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Twiford's Memorial Chapel, Church St. Memorial donations may be made to the Family Life Center of Ramoth Gilead Baptist Church or to Faith Assembly of God.
