Gates County IndexOct. 30, 2002Vernon G. James Sr. James was the son of the late John Calvin and Fanny Coppersmith James and was the husband of Thelma Sanders James. He was a charter member of the NC 4-H Honor Club, the House of Representatives for 26 years, Salem Baptist Church, Eureka Lodge 317 AF & AM, Elizabeth City York Bodies and Sudan Shrine Temple of New Bern. A funeral was held Oct. 24, 2002 in Twiford's Memorial Chapel with the Rev. Michael Jordan officiating. Burial was in the Salem Baptist Church Cemetery. A memorial service was held at the Fine Arts Center of ECSU Oct. 24, 2002 In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Vernon James Scholarship, c/o 4-H Development Fund, Box 7645, Raleigh, NC 27695-7645. Survivors include his wife, Thelma S James; a daughter, Joyce Beutler of Mapleton, UT; a son, Alan Sanders of Hickory; two sisters. Jemima Markham and Irene Roberson, both of Elizabeth City: a brother, William James of Winfall; 12 grandchildren, and 18 great-grandchildren. Allen T. Kee Emily N. Sears A funeral was held Oct. 23, 2002 in Lebanon Grove Baptist Church. Hattie M. Bazemore She was the daughter of the late Nettie Benton Knight and Joseph Henry Knight. Bazemore was the widow of Wilson Bazemore and she retired as a self-employed cosmetologist. She was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church, Christ Mission Club and Sunday School, Sunday Ready Chapter No. 154 OES past matron, and former member of Golden Rod Tent Lodge. Survivors include a daughter, Lucille H. Wiggins; two sisters, Ada Curry of Portsmouth and Sarah Conaway 'of Portsmouth, a grandchild, and a great-grandchild. Violet N. Harrell Harrell was the daughter of the late Joe Polly Harrell and Zebulon Vance Harrell. She was a member of Cool Springs Baptist Church, attended Woodland United Methodist Church, was active as an adult leader with the 4-H and was a member of White Hat Home Demonstration Club. A funeral was held Oct. 26, 2002 in Woodland United Methodist Church with a graveside service held at Cool Springs Baptist Church Cemetery, Eure. Memorials may be sent to Woodland United Methodist Church Scholarship Fund, 352 Woodland Church Road, Hertford, NC 27944. Survivors include her husband, James Wesley Harrell; two daughters and June Piland of Clayton, NC and Jill Kahl of Hertford; four sons, Pat Harrell, Jesse Harrell, Joe Allen Harrell and Jimmy Harrell, all of Hertford; a sister, Marigold Byrd of Suffolk, 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. J. Haywood Greene Sr. Green was the son of the late Sam and Ella Umphlette Greene. He had retired from Norfolk Naval Air Station as a sheet metal fabricator and was a Navy veteran of World War II. A member of Eure Baptist Church, he also was active in the Ray's Beach Fishing Club, the Gates County Hunt Club and the White Oak Hunt Club. A funeral was held Oct. 26, 2002 in Eure Baptist Church by the Rev. Joseph Buck. Burial was in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to Eure Baptist Church, the Eure Volunteer Fire Dept. or to one's favorite charity. Survivors include his wife, Jeanette Weeks Greene; two sons, Joseph H. Greene Jr. and Larry D. Greene, all of Eure; two sisters, Nellie Ruth Hill of Eure and Clatta G. Sawyer of Portsmouth; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Wilbert Horne Horne was the son of the late Jesse and Mary Horne, who resided in Rocky Mount. Horne attended in Rocky Mount and graduated from Howard University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology. Survivors include two daughters, Monica C. Vaughn of Lawrenceville. NJ and Briana Horne of Williamston; four sisters, Jessie Griffith of Williamston, Jean Allen of Elizabeth City, Willie B. Wimberly and Willie Mae Price, both of Washington, DC; one brother, Jonnie L. Horne of Rocky Mount, a grandson, Michael Vaughn of Lawrenceville, NJ and a special friend, Chenay Costen of Sunbury. Linwood B. Jordan Sr. Jordan was the owner and operator of Gates Poultry Farm. He was a member and deacon at Oak Grove Christian Church, a graduate of the Specialized Poultry School of the Ag Business Institute, a member and officer of the North Carolina Egg and Poultry Assn., a member of the Southern United Egg Producers and had received CHC Leadership and Achievement Awards in 1974, 1975 and from 1980 through 1994. A funeral was held Nov. 30, 2002 in Oak Grove Christian
Church with the Rev. Garrett Survivors include his wife, Lois Greene Jordan, two daughters,
Lynne Rountree and Cindy Harrell, all of Hobbsville; a son, Linwood B.
Jordan Jr. of Eure, a sister, Jean Koch and a brother, Roy Jordan, all
of Virginia Beach, and nine grandchildren. |
