Rosa Payton
HOBBSVILLE - Rosa Payton, 80, a native of Gates County, died Oct. 27, 2002 at her residence.

Payton was employed as a beautician and was a member of St. John AME Zion Church.

A funeral was held Oct. 31, 2002 at St. John AME Zion Church with the Rev. W.A. Littlejohn presiding. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include one son, Willie Payton Jr. of Corapeake; two daughters, Janet Privotte and Brenda Smith, both of Sunbury; two brothers, William Saunders and Thomas Saunders, both of Waterbury, Ct; four sisters, Shirley Robinson of Brooklyn, NY, Betty Greene and Dorothy Harge, both of Waterbury, Ct; and Jessie Williams of Norfolk, Va.; nine grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.

Nellie S. Parker
EURE - Nellie Spivey Parker, 86, a native of Gates County, died Oct. 30, 2002 in Down East Health and Rehab, Gatesville.

Mrs. Parker was the daughter of the late Oliver Randolph and Bessie Umphlett Spivey. She was the wife of the late Carlyle Manley Parker and was a homemaker and a member of Eure Baptist Church.

A funeral was held Oct. 1, 2002 in Eure Baptist Church by the Rev. Wayne Gardner. Burial was in the church cemetery.

Survivors include three daughters, Ann Howell, Kay Smith and Arlen Horton, all of Eure; a son, Carl Burgess Parker of Roanoke, Va.; two sisters, Ollie Tyler of Raleigh and Ethel Smith of Floyd, Va.; 10 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Milton E. Phthisic Sr.
ELIZABETH CITY - Milton Elliss Phthisic Sr., 68, a native of Perquimans County, died Oct. 29,2002.

Phthisic was the son of the late Wilbur M. and Dorothy Cartwright Phthisic, formerly of Belvidere and was a retired truck driver.

A funeral was held Nov. 2, 2002 in Twiford's Memorial Chapel with Pastor Scott Neal officiating. Burial was held in Westlawn Memorial park Cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Lynda Davis Phthisic; four sons, Milton E. Phthisic Jr. of Belvidere, Ricky L. Phthisic, David Michael Phthisic and Steven E. Phthisic, all of Elizabeth City; a brother, Johnnie Phthisic of Belvidere; two sisters, Doris Hollowell of Hobbsville and Faye Proctor of Hertford, and 12 grandchildren.

Linwood B. Jordan Sr.
CORAPEAKE - Linwood Britten Jordan Sr., 61, a native of Gates County, died Oct. 27, 2002 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Jordan was the owner and operator of Gates Poultry Farm. Jordan was a member and deacon of Oak Grove Christian Church, a graduate of Specialized Poultry School of the Ag Business Institute, a member and officer of the North Carolina Egg and Poultry Assn., a member of the Southern United Egg Producers, and had received CHC Leadership and Achievement Awards in 1974, 1975 and from 1980 through 1994.

A funeral was held Oct. 30, 2002 in Oak Grove Christian Church by the Rev. Garrett Lewis and the Rev. Gene Asbill. Burial was in the church cemetery will Rev. Lewis, assisted by Dr. Charles Jones officiating. Survivors include his wife, Lois Greene Jordan; his mother, Jeanette Winslow Jordan of Corapeake; two daughters, Lynne Rountree and Cindy Harrell, all of Hobbsville; a son, Linwood B. Jordan Jr. of Eure; a sister, Jean Koch and a brother, Roy Jordan, all of Virginia Beach; and nine grandchildren.

S. Timothy Eure
GATES - S. Timothy Eure, 90, a native of Gates County, died Nov. 2, 2002.

Eure was the son of the late Zebedee and Caroline Felton Eure. He had retired from Union Camp Corp., now International Paper in Franklin, Va. after 26 years of employment and farmed the land he loved in Gates County until his recent illness. Eure was a lifelong and active member of Eure Christian Church and the Gatesville Masonic Lodge #126 for more than 50 years.

A funeral was conducted Nov. 4, 2002 in Eure Christian Church by the Rev. Wayne Gardner. Masonic rites will be accorded in the church and burial was held in the church cemetery.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Felton Eure; a son, C. Raeford Eure; two brothers, Delton Eure of Eure and Luther Eure of Gatesville; a sister, Penistine of Gatesvillle; two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.

Anna G. Askew
GATESVILLE - Anna Grace Askew, infant daughter of William Tony and Caroline Eason Askew, was born and died Oct. 29, 2002 at Obici Hospital.

A private graveside service for the family was held Nov. 1, 2002 in Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. William Clements officiating.

Survivors include her maternal grandparents, Sherwood and Etta Eason of Gatesville; paternal grandparents, Lynnwood and Shirley Askew of Eure and her maternal great- grandmother, Annie Spivey of Hobbsville.

Marie F. Saunders
COLERAIN- Marie Felton Saunders, 82, of the 2000 block of NC Highway 45 South, died Monday, October 28, 2002, in her home.

Mrs. Saunders was born in Gates County and was a member of Harrellsville United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her husband, Grady Winborne Saunders. They began their lives together as farmers and retired as merchants in the Christian Harbor Community.

Survivors include a daughter, Gladys S. Godwin and her husband, George, of Spring Hope; a son, Grady Wayne Saunders and his wife, Susan, of Harrellsville; a sister, Helen Eure of Gates; a brother, Stanley Felton of Chesapeake, VA; five grandchildren, Sharon Jones and Mitzi Stocks, both of Kinston, Stephanie D'Amico of Burkburnett, TX, Gary Saunders of Greenville, Corey Saunders of Harrellsville; and five great-grandchildren, Jason, Jessica, Amanda, Dylan and Noah.

A funeral service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, October 30, 2002, in Harrellsville United Methodist Church by the Rev. Walter Johnson. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the home. Memorial donations may be made to Harrellsville United Methodist Church Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is serving the Saunders family.

To know Marie was to love her. She touched so many lives and will be missed by all.
