John E. Piland
HERTFORD--- John Edward Piland, 83, native of Gates County, died Jan. 6, 2003 in his home.

Piland was the son of the late Ike and Sophie Lassiter Piland. He worked with the former Towe Motor Company as an auto mechanic for 40 years and was a member of Hertford Baptist Church.

Graveside services were held Jan. 9, 2003 in Cedar Wood Cemetery with the Rev. Kenneth MeNeill officiating.

Survivors include his wife Myrtle Hill Piland, a son John E. Piland Jr. of Clayton, NC; a sister, Maxie Lassiter of Gatesville; two grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Johnetta B. Pettengill
HERTFORD---Johnetta Belch Pettengill, 88 a native of Chowan County, died Jan. 8 2003, at Guardian Care of Ahoskie.

Penttengill was a widow of Williard LaRue Pettengill and the daughter of the late Lula Valentine and Zeddic Albert Belch. She was a member of the Woodville Baptist Church and the Durants Neck Ruritanettes.

A funeral service was held Jan. 11, 2003 in Woodville Baptist Church. Burial was in the Beaver Hill Cemetery, Edenton.

Survivors include two daughters, Debbie Barket of Ahoskie and Elaine Rigby of Wells, ME; a son, John L. Pettengill of Richmond, Va.; and eight grandchildren.

Marie W. Jones
CORAPEAKE-Marie Wilson Johnson [sic], 70, a native of Gates County, died Jan. 9, 2003, in Louise Obici Memorial Hospital, Suffolk.

Jones was the daughter of the late Williams Thomas and Mildred Benton Wilson. A homemaker, she was member of Savage's United Methodist Church.

A funeral was held Jan. 11, 2003 in Savage's United Methodist Church with the Rev. Terry Williams officiating. Burial was in the Parker's United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Survivals include her husband, David F. "Buddy" Jones.

Jewel Couch Jr.
GATESVILLE---Jewel "Smokey" Couch Jr., 70, a native of hot Springs, Ark, died Jan. 8, 2003 in Chowan Hospital, Edenton.

Couch was the son of the late Jewel Sr. and Flora Weaver Couch. A U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War, he had retired from the Norfolk Ford Assembly Plant after 37 years of employment.

A graveside service will be held Jan. 13, 2003 in Rosewood Memorial Park, Virginia Beach. The family asks that flowers be omitted and contributions be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Survivors include his wife, Elizabeth Ann Shires Couch; two daughters, Paulette Klingensmith of Fairmont, W. Va. And Charmaine Couch of Chesapeake; two sons, Jewel "Rockey" Couch III and Stacey Couch, both of Chesapeake; a stepdaughter, Lisa Evans of Gatesville; two sisters, Lorraine Skrivanas of Little Rock, Ark. And Dorothy Craine of Chesapeake; four grandchildren; a great-granddaughters, three step-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.

Evie E. Howell
EURE--- Evie Penny Eure Howell, 93, a native of Gates County, died Jan 9, 2003 in Down East Health & Rehab Center.

Howell was the widow of Ocie N. Howell and the daughter of the late Oscar and Mary Greene Eure. She was a member of the Eure Christian Church.

A funeral service was held Jan. 12, 2003 in Eure Christian Church with the Rev. Billy Presley officiating. Burial took place in the Eure Family section of the church cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Eure Christians Church, 872 NC 137, Eure, NC 27935, University Hospice, P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, NC 27910 or the Gates County Rescue Squad, P.O. Box 208, Gatesville, NC 27938.

Survivors include two daughters, Annie Mary Beasley of Eure, and Barbara Marie Howell of Milton, FL; a son, William Edward Howell of Newport News, VA; a sister, Celia Foutz of Eure; a brother, Lloyd Eure of Eure; six grandchildren and five great- grandchildren.

Jerome S. Hill
SUNBURY--- Jerome Steadman "Shake" Hill, 73, a native of Gates County, died Jan. 11, 2003 in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.

Hill was the son of the late Willie Pope and Maude Taylor Hill. A retired farmer, he had won the award for many years for Gates County's Top Peanut Producer given by the North Carolina Peanut Growers Association.

A funeral was held Jan. 14, 2003 in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville with the Rev. Billy Presley officiating. Burial was in Damascus Christian Church Cemetery, Sunbury.

Survivors include his wife, Martha Ann Baines Hill; two sisters, Norma Vaughn of Seabrook, Texas and Evelyn Anderson of Jackson, Miss.; and a brother, Graham H. Hill Sr. of Chesapeake.
