Sarah V. Bynum
SUFFOLK, VA--- Sarah V. Bynum, 68, died Dec. 25, 2002 at Louise Obici Hospital.

Bynum was the widow of Bishop Willie J. Bynum. She was a member and co-pastor of Pentecostal Followers of Christ and Mother of the Southern District of PFPJC Inc.

A funeral was held Dec. 30, 2002 in Bibleway Holiness Church in Chesapeake with Pastor Reginald L. Bynum officiating. Burial was in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake.

Survivors include five daughters, Beverly B. Nicholson, Charlene Bynum, both of Suffolk, Sharon McPherson of Newport News, Anita Williams of Wilmington, and Linda D. Bynum of Richmond; six sons, Willie Bynum of Newport News, Alton Bynum, Reginald Bynum, both of Suffolk, Paul Bynum of Chesapeake and Maurice Bynum of Windsor, Va.; her mother, Katie Bennett of Portsmouth; a sister, Mary Stevenson of Portsmouth; a brother, Earnest Bennett of Baton Rouge, La.; 22 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.

Jennie H. Moore
HOBBSVILLE--- Jennie Hollowell Moore, 97, a native of gates County, died Dec. 28, 2002 in Britthaven of Edenton.

Moore was the daughter of the late William Dorsey and Anna Mariah Hobbs Hollowell and the widow of John Herman Moore. A homemaker, she was a member of Warwick Baptist Church.

A funeral was held Dec. 30, 2002 in Warwick Baptist Church by Dr, Charles Jones, pastor. Burial was held in the church cemetery.

Survivors include four sons, William Melvin Moore of Chesapeake, Elton H. Moore of Tampa, Fla., Oley L. Moore and J. Larry Moore all of Hobbsville; 15 grandchildren; two great grandchildren.

John J. King
CHESAPEAKE, Va.--- John Jenkins King, 79 a native of Gates County, died Dec. 25, 2002.

King was a member of Savage United Methodist Church. He was the son of the late John and Eva May King. He was a retired Army Master Sergeant serving in World War II, Korea and Vietnam.

A funeral was held Dec. 28, 2002 in Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel. Interment was in Meadowbrook memorial Gardens with military honors. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association.

Survivors include his wife, Monika King; two daughters, Monika May Petrakos of Winter Spring, Fla., and Sonja Nadeau of Suffolk; three sons, John Dietmar King of Chesapeake, Victor LeRoy King of Timber Lake, NC and Robert David King of Jacksonville, Fla., a brother, Thornton Hunter king of Apache, Okla.; and nine grandchildren.

Amy G. Ferdman
SUFFOLK, VA---Amy Sylvia Glass Ferdman, 84, died Dec. 30, 2002 at Autumn Care of Suffolk.

A native of Pocomoke City, Md., she was a homemaker and the widow of U.S. Air Force retired Master Sgt. Martin E. Ferdman. She was the daughter of the late Charles Glass and Ida Karp Glass.

A memorial service will take place at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery. Memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer's Association, Hampton Roads Chapter, No. 20 The Interstate Corp, Center, Suite 233, Norfolk, VA 23502.

Survivors include a daughter, Ilona Harrigan of Corapeake, a grandson and a granddaughter.

Amie L. Jones
PORTSMOUTH, VA --- Annie Lee Jones, 88, a native of Southampton County, died Dec. 30, 2002 in a Portsmouth Hospital.

Jones was retired as one of the first school guards for the city of Portsmouth. She was a member of Craddock Baptist Church and was a former member and Sunday School teacher at Jackson Memorial Baptist Church.

A funeral will be held Jan. 2, 2002 in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel by Pastor James Woodland officiating. Burial was held in the Olive Branch Cemetery.

Survivors include nieces and nephews; great nieces and nephews.

Leavy A. Smith
GATES-Leavy A. Smith, a native of Gates County, died Dec. 30, 2002 in Guardian Care of Scotland Neck.

Smith was a member of Stoney Branch Baptist Church.

A funeral was held Jan. 3, 2003 at Stoney Branch Baptist Church with the Rev. Michael Holloman officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery.

Survivors include a sister, Dorothy Gatling of Hampton, Va. and one brother, Johnny B. Smith of Franklin, Va.

Martha C. Abbott
GATES-Martha Chestnut Abbott, 63, a native of Lenoir County, NC, died Jan. 2, 2003 in Obici Hospital, Suffolk.

Mrs. Abbott was a homemaker and a member of a Savage's United Methodist Church.

A funeral was held Jan. 4, 2003 in Savage's United Methodist Church by the Rev. Terry Williams. Burial was held in the church cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Savage's United Methodist Church, c/o Mallory Buck, 210 Mallory Buck Road, Gates, NC 27937.

Survivors include her son, Jeffrey Corbin Abbott of Gates; a sister, Margaret Benedict of Prince George, Va.; and a brother, Marion Chestnut of Kingston.

Mataline B. Savage
Sunbury--- Mataline Brinkley Savage, 84, a native of Nansemond County, died Jan. 3, 2003 in her home.

Mrs. Savage was the daughter of the late Carlton and May Belle Brinkley. A member of Beulah Baptist Church she had retired from Sunday School after 23 years of employment in the school's cafeteria.

Graveside services were held Jan. 6, 2003 in the Damascus Christian Church Cemetery by the Rev. Ron Parr, former pastor of Beulah Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Beulah Baptist Church, Sunbury, NC 27979.

Survivors include her son, Mack Arthur Savage of Mechanicsville, Va.; a brother, Thomas Brinkley of Suffolk; three grandsons, a granddaughter, two great-granddaughters, two great-grandsons and a step grandson.

Robert E. Eason
POMEROY, Ohio---Bob Eason, 75, a native of Gatesville, died Dec. 31, 2003 [sic] at his residence following an extended illness.

Eason was the son of the late Hubert and Lucille Blanchard Eason. Eason was a professional surveyor. He retired from American Electric Power having worked at the Gavin and Phillip Sporn plants. During World War II he served in the Army and was a member of the Drew Webster Post 39 of the American Legion in Pomeroy. He served two terms as Meigs County engineer and was a lifetime member of the Ohio County Engineer Association. Eason was a graduate of North Carolina State University and a member of the Pomeroy United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Nora Mae Riggs Eason; his sons, Robert R. Eason and Hubert A. Eason; a daughter, Linda R. Warner; a brother, James Lee Eason of Franklin, Va. and three grandchildren.

A funeral service Jan. 5, 2003 in Fisher Funeral Home in Pomeroy, with the Rev. Bob Robinson officiating. Burial will be in Meigs Memory Gardens. Graveside services will be conducted by Drew Webster Post 39 of the American Legion. Memorial contributions may be made to the Angela Eason Memorial Park, c/o Home National Bank, P.O. Box 68, Racine, OH 45771.

Deborah M. Cooper
HOBBSVILLE-Deborah Marie Cooper, 50, a native of Great Lakes, Ill, died an. 4, 2003 in Chowan Hospital, Edenton.

Cooper had formerly owned and operated Debi's Beauty Shop in Sunbury. She was a Lutheran in faith.

Graveside services was held Jan. 7, 2003 in the Winslow Family Cemetery, near the home with the Dr, Charles Jones, Pastor Warwick Baptist Church.

Survivors include her father, Robert R. Winslow and her brothers, Robert R. Winslow and Robert G. "Greg" Winslow, both of Hobbsville.

James Saunders
PHILADELPHIA, PA--- James Saunders, 60, a native of gates County died Jan. 2, 2003.

Saunders was the son of Joseph and Luecreacy Twine Saunders. He graduated with Central High School, where he served as class president. He attended North Carolina Central University, where he was a member of the tennis team, business editor of the college newspaper and class president. He received a B.A. degree in Sociology.

Saunders was a member of St. John AME Zion Church in Sunbury and was retired as a health care administrator in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Connecticut. He was particularly proud of his contributions at Intercultural Family Services in Philadelphia and Hill Health Center in New Haven, where he served 11 years. After retirement, he continued to stay busy by working part-time at Macy's Department Store. He was also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and the Frontiersmen.

A funeral service will be held Jan. 9, 2003 in Philadelphia, PA.

Survivors include his wife Barbara H. Saunders, a son, VonEric Saunders,; two daughters, Shawn P. Saunders and Kirsten Nicole Saunders, all of Laverock, PA; a sister, Effie Daniels of Portsmouth, VA; a brother, and Arthur McCray Saunders of Sunbury.
