Evelyn L. Bays
GATESVILLE---Evelyn Lassiter Bays, 86 a native of Gates County, died Jan. 30, 2003 at her residence.

Bay is the daughter of he late Henry and Irene Lassiter and was the widow of Retired Army Master Sergeant Delbert H. Bays.

A graveside services was held Feb. 1, 2003 at Eure Christian Church with the Rev. Wayne Gardner officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests anyone wishing may make a memorial gift in her memory to Eure Christian Church, 875 NC 137, Eure, NC 27935, University Health Systems Hospice Care, 521 West Myers Street, Ahoskie, 27910 or to the Gates County Rescue Squad, Gatesville, NC 27938.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Ann Tankovich or Herndon, Va. And Lillian Taylor of Suffolk, Va.; and two grand-daughters.

Joyce M. Iannacone
SUNBURY---Joyce Marie Iannacone, 55, a native of Norwalk, Conn., and her fiancé James Herb Hodges, died in a house fire Jan. 28, 2003.

A memorial service was held Feb. 2, 2003 in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to the Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters.

Survivors include her parents, Mr. And Mrs. Frank H. Broadhurst of Virginia Beach, Va.; a daughter, Melissa Iannacone; two sons, John Anzalone and Mario Anzalone; a sister, Lorraine F. Sayas; three brothers, Kenneth F. Broadhurst, J.W. Broadhurst and Frank S. Broadhurst; and numerous grandchildren.

R. Carson Winslow
SUNBURY-Robert Carson Winslow, 80, a native of Gates County, died Jan. 30, 2003 in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.

Winslow was the son of the late James Elbert and Hannah Elizabeth Rountree Winslow. A farmer, he was an active member of Damascus Christian Church where he had served as a deacon and had been a member of the choir. Winslow had served in the Merchant Marines.

A graveside service was held Feb. 2, 2003 in Up River cemetery with the Rev. Forrest Guthrie officiating. Memorial donations may be directed to Damascus Church, c/o Michelle Sawyer, 372 Sugar Run Road, Sunbury, NC 27979.

Survivors include his wife, Lucille Lane Winslow; two sons, Robert Lane Winslow and Barry Lee Winslow, both of Sunbury; two sisters, Lillie Bray of Elizabeth City and Neva Barrow of Suffolk; a brother, James Winslow of Roxboro and three grandchildren.

Mary E. Puckett
EURE---Mary Elizabeth Puckett, 68, a native of Richmond, Va., died Jan. 30, 2003 in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

Puckett was the daughter of the late Victor and Maggie Lawson Holmes. A homemaker, she was a Pentecostal Holiness by faith.

A funeral was held Feb. 2, 2003 in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville with Elder Gerald Goodman officiating. Burial was in the family cemetery.

Survivors include her husband, Walter G. Puckett; two daughters, Rhonda Puckett Lilley of Windsor, NC and Karen Puckett mills of Eure; a son, Ricky Puckett of Richlands, Va.; a brother, Alvin Holmes of Richlands; seven grandchildren, a great-grandchild and two step grand-children.

Bertha Bond
SUNBURY---Bertha Wiggins "Willie" Bond, 93, of Sugar R8un [sic] Road, died Jan. 29, 2003.

A funeral was held Feb. 3, 2003 at St. John AME Zion Church.

James H. Hodges
SUNBURY---James Herbert Hodges, 56, a native of Honolulu, Hawaii, died Jan. 28, 2003 as the result of a house fire.

Hodges was the son of the late Jervis Mark and Maxine Dupree Hodges. He was the owner and operator of Hodges Auto and Tier in the Newland section of Pasquotank County.

A funeral was held Feb. 3, 2003 in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville. Burial was held in Memory Gardens Cemetery.

Survivors include three daughters, Theresa Hodges of Sunbury, Melissa Kanarek of Phoenix, Ariz., and Nicole Barnes of Newland; and three grandchildren.

Lois W. Riddick
HOBBSVILLE---Lois West Riddick, 75, a native of Whaleyville, Va., died Feb. 1, 2003 in Life Care Center Nursing Home, Columbia, S.C.

Riddick was the daughter of the late Clarence Hilliard and Iva Virginia Milteer West and the widow of Herman Riddick Jr. A retired registered nurse, she was a member of Hobbsville Baptist Church.

A funeral was held Feb. 4, 2003 in Hobbsville Baptist Church. Burial was in the Riddick Family Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Hobbsville Baptist Church or the charity of one's choice.

Survivors include two daughters, Connie Neofotis of Burlington, NC and Daphne Joseph of Columbia, SC; a son W.H. Riddick III of Hobbsville; a brother Wayne West of Jackson, NC and five grandchildren.
