Gates County IndexMarch 5, 2003Rev. Sidney G. Boone Boone was the son of the late Minnie Belle and William Jordan Boone. Rev. Boone earned his B.A. Degree from Duke University in1934 and answered the call to the ministry in 1941. While preaching he attended Duke Divinity School and received his B.D. Degree in 1945. During his 40-year career, Rev. Boone was honored to serve at the following churches in the North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church: Sandy Cross; Robersonville; Rocky Mount, Clark Street; Norlina; Wendell; Williamston; Durham, Asbury; Dunn, Divine Street; Wilmington, Trinity; and Mt. Pleasant, Middlesex. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the United Methodist Retirement Home at UMRH Foundation, 2600 Croasdaile Farm Parkway, Suite A-500, Durham, NC 27705. Survivors include his wife, Katherine Abemethy Boone; and three sons, Sidney Grant Boone Jr., Samuel J. Boone and John A. Boone; two brothers, Roger and Sam Boone and a sister, Mary Elizabeth Richardson and seven grandchildren. Woodard E. Eure Sr. Eure was a 60-year member of Park View Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon. He retired as a welder from Shop No. 26, Norfolk Naval Shipyard and after his retirement he drove a school bus for Portsmouth Catholic School. He was a 50-year member of Western Branch Masonic Lodge NO. 189, where he served as Worshipful Master, was a coach for Westhaven Little League and a member of the Beazley Senior Center. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Funeral services were held Feb. 27, 2003 at Loving Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, with the Rev. Neal Sasser and the Rev. Damon E. Wyatt officiating. Burial was in the Olive Branch Cemetery with Masonic rites. Survivors include his wife, Ardelle Eure; two daughters, Pam Rhodes of Roanoke and Betty Ann Powell of Chesapeake; two sons, Woodard E. "Buddy" Eure Jr. of Portsmouth and Jim Eure of Richmond; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Mary S. Johnson Johnson was the daughter of the late Zeno Marvin Stocks and Minnie Irene Suggs Stocks. Johnson had retired as a cashier with Earles Supermarkets. She was a member of Eureka Baptist Church, and the Ida K. Brinkley Sunday School Class, the Young at Heart, Women's Missionary Union and the Fannie Knight King Circle. She was a volunteer for the Meals on Wheels program in Corapeake. Funeral services were held Monday in the Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of the Harrell and Hill Funeral Home in Suffolk with the Revs. Ernest Trueblood and Cameron Currin officiating. Memorials may be made to Eureka Baptist Church Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 68, Corapeake, NC 27926. Survivors include her husband, Billy E. Johnson Sr.; a daughter, Shelby Gwaltney of Suffolk, a son, Pete Johnson of Virginia Beach, a step-son, Gene Johnson of St. Augustine, FL; a sister, Marie Morgan of Corapeake, two brothers, Kerren Stocks of Corapeake and Donald Stocks of Virginia Beach; eight grandchildren, two great grandchildren and one great- great-grandchild. Tommie W. Ellis Ellis was the son of the late William and Mary Ann Dail Ellis. He was a farmer and formerly worked for Weyerhaeuser. He was a member of Calvary Pentecoastal Holiness Church. Funeral services were held March 2, 2003 in Swindell Funeral Home Chapel with Ken Spivey officiating. Burial was in: Cedar Wood Cemetery. Survivors include his wife, Maude Winslow Ellis. Ralph L. Grimstead A graveside service was held March 3, 2003 in Hampton Cemetery. Twiford Memorial Chapel, Elizabeth City was in charge. Bertha W. Bond Bond attended Gates County Training School now known as
T.S. Cooper Elementary School. She was a member of St. John AME Zion
