Laverne D. Walker

SUFFOLK, Va. - Laverne Delach Walker, 60, a native of Pittsburgh, Pa., died May 7, 2003, in Obici Hospital.

She was a retail manager with Fashion Cents and was a member of Open Door Church, Suffolk.

Survivors include a daughter, Ellen Walker of Suffolk; sons, John Walker of Gaithersburg, Md. and Peter Walker of Richmond; a sister, Maryellen D. Ceney of Gatesville, and six grandchildren.

A memorial service was conducted Saturday at Sidney F. Harrell Chapel of the Harrell and Hill Funeral Home by the Rev. Tony Peaks. Interment was private. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, Suffolk Unit, Memorial Donations, 604 Constance Woods Drive, Suffolk, VA 23434.

Brady Lewis

PENDLETON - Brady Lewis, 78, died May 9, 2003, at his residence.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Galilee Baptist Church, Branchville, Va. Faison's Funeral Home, Seaboard, is in charge.

Emerson Howell

SUNBURY - Emerson Howell, 72, a native of Gates County, died May 7, 2003, at his residence.

A funeral was conducted Monday at Middle Swamp Baptist Church, Corapeake, by the Rev. Littlejohn. Burial was in the church cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, was in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Vivian Wolfrey Howell; two daughters, Shelia Spence of Elizabeth City and Jackquelyn Robertson of Fort Washington, Md.; one son, Emerson L. Howell of Sunbury; one sister, Shirley Ann White of Raleigh; one brother, Osborne Howell of Hampton, Va.; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Ora M. Edwards

MURFREESBORO -Ora Mae Edwards, died May 8, 2003, at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Allen Chapel AME Church by the Rev. Robert L. Goode. Hood Funeral Home, Conway, is in charge.

Willie Everett Sr.

AULANDER - Willie Carlton Everett Sr., 66, a native of Hertford County, died May 9, 2003, at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Greater Harvest Fellowship Church, Aulander, by Elder Gomize Hoggard. Burial will be in the Cherry Family Cemetery, Aulander. Wilder's Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

Everett was a nailer with Bennett Box Company and a member of Greater Harvest Fellowship Church.

Survivors include his wife, Vernice Baker Everett; five sons, Bernard Everett of Aulander, Willie Everett Jr. of Alexander, Va., Michael Everett of Fort Washington, Md., Randy Everett of Forestville and Dwight Everett of Ahoskie; five daughters, Carolyn Johnson of Chesapeake, Shelia Edwards of Baltimore, Linda Askew of Lawton, Okla., Wanda Everett of Suffolk and Jacqueline Jenkins of Durham; three brothers, Walter Everett, Ronald Everett and Kenny Everett, all of Aulander; eight sisters, Roberta Vaughan of Ahoskie, Marie Williams of Saluda, Brenda Jennings of Fayetteville, Sallie Mae Askew of New Carrollton, Doreatha Foster of Greenbelt, Josephine Lee of Upper Marlboro, Mildred Holloman of Ft. Washington and Elizabeth Chase of Hyattsville; 24 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

Earnestine Burden

AHOSKIE - Earnestine Burden, 55, a native of Hertford County, died May 10, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at St. John 2nd Baptist Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. Lebron Britt. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder's Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.

Miss Burden was employed with Gwaltney of Smithfield, Va., and a member of St. John 2nd Baptist Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Serena Moneé Burden; a son, Donald Gene Burden; both of the home; two sisters, Alice Burden of Suitland, Md., and Gloria Burden of Aulander; three brothers, Alphonso Burden and Clarence Burden, both of Aulander and Charles Burden of Murfreesboro; and a grandson.

Brady Lewis

PENDLETON - Brady ``Gale'' Lewis, 78, died May 9, 2003.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Galilee Baptist Church, Branchville. Faison's Funeral Home, Seaboard, in charge.

Jerry L. Cuthrell

HOBBSVILLE - Jerry Lee Cuthrell, 62, a native of Hyde County, died May 10, 2003, in Brian Care Center, Hertford.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Damascus Christian Church by the Rev. Forrest Guthrie. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge. Memorial contributions may be made to Damascus Church, Sunbury, NC 27979.

Cuthrell had retired from the North Carolina Department of Transportation and was a member of the Water Swamp Hunt Club.

Survivors include his mother, Rachel Mooney McDaniel of Sunbury; his daughter, Connie Cuthrell of Eure; a sister, Camilla Bunch of Dinwiddie, Va.; five half-sisters, Jackie Sawyer, Marie Sawyer, Louise McDonnzile, Ann Lewis, and Zoradia Cuthrell; and two half-brothers, James Cuthrell and Albert Cuthrell, both of Hyde County.

Roger R. Manley

HARRELLSVILLE - Roger Ray Manley, died May 11, 2003.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

George Smith

GATES - George Smith, 47, a native of Hertford County, died May 8, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Blanchard Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Charlie Moore. Burial will be in the church cemetery following cremation. Hunter's Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Smith was employed with Countrywide Logging.

Survivors include a son, Thomas Harley of Elizabeth City; two daughters, Penny Hinton of Elizabeth City and Vanetta Mitchell of Fayetteville; his parents, James and Nancy Smith of Gates; a brother, James Smith Jr. of Gates; three sisters, Lucille Boyce, Nancy Riddick and Avis Smith of Gates; and three grandchildren.

Jessie Deloatch

MURFREESBORO - Jessie Deloatch, 61, a native of Hertford County, died May 8, 2003.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hunter's Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. James Hampton. Burial will be in the Deloatch family cemetery.

Deloatch was employed with Borneo Inc.

Survivors include his wife, Clementine Mason of Ahoskie;; his mother, Hattie Deloatch of Murfreesboro; two sons, Joe Deloatch of Ahoskie and Jessie Deloatch Jr. of Colorado; five daughters, Clementine Mason, Jeanette Deloatch, Debbie Deloatch and Diane Deloatch, all of Ahoskie, and Brenda Deloatch of Fayetteville; one sister, Bobbi Spearman of Como; and six grandchildren.
