The R-C News-HeraldJune 3, 2003Lucille L. Winslow SUNBURY - Lucille Lane Winslow, 85, a native of Perquimans County, died May 30, 2003, in Winslow Memorial Home, Elizabeth City. She was the widow of Robert Carson Winslow. A graveside service was conducted Monday in Up River Cemetery by the Rev. Forrest Guthrie. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Damascus Christian Church, Sunbury, NC 27979 or to the Up River Cemetery Fund, c/o Clinton Winslow, 1543 Belvidere Road, Belvidere, NC 27919. Mrs. Winslow was a retired clerk from Rose's 5-10-25 cents Store in Hertford. She was a member of Damascus Christian Church. Survivors include two sons, Robert Lane Winslow and Barry Lee Winslow, both of Sunbury; a brother, Clyde Lane of Hertford; and three grandchildren. Richard E. Hurdle HOBBSVILLE - Richard Ephriam "Dick" Hurdle, 85, a native of Perquimans County, died May 31, 2003, at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City. He was the widower of Mildred Hollowell Hurdle. A funeral was conducted Monday at Sandy Cross Baptist Church by the Rev. E. Vernon Gilmer Jr. Burial was in Hobbsville Baptist Church Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, was in charge. Hurdle has retired as the mill foreman of Younce and Ralph Lumber Co. in Belhaven and was a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church. Survivors include two daughters, DiAnne H. Bryant of Franklin, Va., and Kathy Hurdle of Hobbsville; a son, Billy R. Hurdle of Clemmons; and a granddaughter. Lucille T. Wills SUFFOLK, Va. - Lucille Tobey Wills, 83, a native of Memphis, Tenn., died May 30, 2003, in Chesapeake General Hospital. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Rev. Billy Presley. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, NC and all other times at the home of her daughter, 160 Collins Road, Suffolk. Mrs. Wills a former mayor of Memphis and Lucille Adams Tobey. She had taught at Bancroft School and Friends School, both in Haddonfield, N.J., and was a member of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, Pa. Survivors include her husband, Robert Parnell Wills; two daughters, Mary Wills Parker of Suffolk and Lucille Johnson of Charlestown, N.H.; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Katherine D. Ashley CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Katherine Davenport Ashley, 78, a native of Chowan County, died May 30, 2003. She was the widow of Elmer Clifton Ashley. A graveside service was conducted Monday at Macedonia Baptist Church by the Rev. Wallace Phillips. Evans Funeral and Cremations of Edenton was in charge. Survivors include four daughters, Barbara Ann Stokeley of Elizabeth City, Constance A. Hall of Gates County, Mona Lisa Adams of Panama City Beach, Fla., and Candance A. Thomas of Chesapeake; a sister, Frances Dolerhie of Cincinnati, Ohio; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. Virginia P. Roberts CHESAPEAKE, Va. - Virginia Powell Roberts, 82, a native of Gates County, died May 30, 2003, at Chesapeake General Hospital. She was the widow of Alexander "Bob" Roberts Jr. A funeral was conducted Monday at Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, Chesapeake by the Rev. Amos Eby. Interment was in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Mrs. Roberts was a graduate of St. Vincent DePaul Hospital School of Nursing. She retired after 20 years of service as a registered nurse from Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was also a member of South Norfolk Christian Church where she was a member and past president of the Dorcas Class. Survivors include a son, Michael Powell Roberts; a daughter, Andrea Roberts Conway; a sister, Lucile Harrell; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Sarah P. Hoggard COLERAIN - Sarah Phelps Hoggard, 66, a native of Bertie County, died June 1, 2003, at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Highland Memorial Gardens. Garrett Funeral Home is in charge. Mrs. Hoggard was a homemaker and attended Colerain Baptist Church. Survivors include her husband, Eugene Hoggard; daughters, Virginia Bailey of Winton, Frances Tull of Windsor, Annette Hoggard of Colerain and Jeanette Taylor of Harrellsville; a son, Dennis Hoggard of Colerain; and seven grandchildren. Oliver L. Bynum Jr. PENDLETON - Oliver Lafayette Bynum Jr., 55, died May 31, 2003, at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church, Severn, by the Rev. Elisha Barnes. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Faison Funeral Home, Seaboard, is in charge. |
