KITTY HAWK -- Charles Edward Felthousen passed peacefully at home April 28, 2003. He was born July 8, 1927 in Buffalo, N.Y., to his loving parents, Robert Joseph and Loretta Stabell Felthousen. He graduated from Canisius High School in Buffalo in 1945 and then voluntarily joined the U.S. Navy for service during World War II. In 1950 he married Dorothy ``Dawn'' McQuaid of Kenmore, N.Y., his loving wife of 53 years. ``Charlie'' graduated from Canisius College in 1952 and later obtained his master's in business administration from George Washington University in 1966. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Navy for 27 years retiring in 1972, having achieved the rank of commander. Thereafter, he was a professor at Tidewater Community College, Virginia Beach Campus, teaching and inspiring many for 13 years. He retired full time to the Outer Banks of North Carolina in 1985. Charlie was a very loving and supportive husband, father and grandfather and is survived by his wife, Dawn; his sister, Dorothy F. Quart of Ohio; his sons, Dr. Gregory C. Felthousen of Westover, Md., Gary J. Felthousen of Austin, Texas, Glenn Felthousen of Virginia Beach and Kris J. Felthousen of Southern Shores, N.C.; and his daughter, Kim Felthousen Sendzik of Virginia Beach. His beloved son, Kurt Edward Felthousen preceded him in death in 1988. His loving brother Robert Joseph Felthousen preceded him in death in 1996. He is also survived by a host of other loving relatives and friends including 15 grandchildren. He was a devoted member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Kitty Hawk, N.C. Among other passions, he was an avid golfer and member of Duck Woods Country Club in Southern Shores, N.C., having served on its Board of Directors from 1999 to 2002. Simply put, Charlie enjoyed life to its fullest. A funeral Mass will be held at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church on Thursday at 10 a.m. with Monsignor Lewis officiating. Burial will be in Princess Anne Memorial Park, Virginia Beach, at 3:30 p.m. The family will receive friends at the church today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Special thanks are given to Dr. Thomas Alberico and staff for their wonderful care and as well as Darlene Rodehaver, home health care nursing professional. The family members respectfully request that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
EURE -- Sandy Eure Blowe, 42, of US Hwy. 13, died April 26, 2003 as the result of injuries received in an automobile accident. Mrs. Blowe was the co-owner of Blowe and Spady, CPAs, PC in Suffolk. She and her partner, Frank A. Spady III established that business in December 1987. A graduate of East Carolina University with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration, she became a licensed Certified Public Accountant in North Carolina in October 1984 and in Virginia in October of 1987. A board member and treasurer of Suffolk Festivals Inc. from 1989 to 1996, she served as chairwoman of the Suffolk Peanut Fest in 1992 and was co-chairperson in 1995. Sandy was an active member of Gatesville United Methodist Church and served as its treasurer. She first played the piano in church at the age of 9 and by age 13 was the church organist. She served as organist continually until her death except for the four years while attending college. Her father, Alvin C. Eure predeceased her in February 2000. Survivors include her husband of nearly 20 years, Ricky Blowe; her mother, Bessie Jernigan Eure of Gatesville; and many extended family members and dear friends. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Gatesville United Methodist Church by the Rev. William Clements. Burial will follow in the Gatesville Cemetery. Friends may join the family Friday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, and all other times at the home of her mother, Main Street, Gatesville. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be directed to the Gatesville United Methodist Church, Main Street, Gatesville, NC 27938.
COLINGTON ISLAND -- Frances V. Cahill, 85, passed away April 27, 2003 at Britthaven Nursing Home in Nags Head. Born on Nov. 1, 1917 in Boston, Mass., she grew up by the ocean in nearby Cape Cod. After moving to New Jersey, she retired as an administrator at Bergen Pines Hospital in Bergen County. She was a member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church and she assisted or sponsored many people over many years in her work with Al-Anon. She was predeceased by her husband, James P. Cahill and her first husband, Paul E. Napier. Survivors include her son, Daniel Napier; her stepson, Patrick J. Cahill; stepdaughter, Lynn M. Cahill; and her grandson, Matthew J. Cahill. A Mass to celebrate her life will be held Saturday at 1 p.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church located at Whalebone Junction in Nags Head. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the O.B. Cancer Support Group, P.O. Box 1934, Manteo, NC 27954.
EURE -- Victor Esteban Lara Dominguez, 2 weeks, the son of Jessica Ballard and Esteban Lara Dominguez, died April 27, 2003, in the Children's Hospital of The King's Daughters, Norfolk. Other survivors include his maternal grandmother, Pattie Ballard; paternal grandparents, Isidora Lara Gomez and Delfina Dominguez Gomez; and several aunts and uncles. A funeral will be held today at 11 a.m. in Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Rev. Eric Earhart. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge.
ELIZABETH CITY -- Paulette Kempinger, 56, of the 400 block of Pasquotank Station Road, died April 27, 2003. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 2 p.m. at Twiford's Memorial Chapel.
RALEIGH -- Carl William ``Bill'' Harmon Jr., 45, of the 8300 block of Crowder Road, died April 28, 2003. He was a native of Norfolk and a 1976 graduate of Lake Taylor High School. He continued his education, after 20 years as a machinist, and graduated from Wake Technical Community College in July 2002 with a degree in industrial maintenance. He was employed in the maintenance division of Greenwood Inc. and worked at Bayer in Clayton, N.C. Mr. Harmon was an active NCAA baseball official and had been with the Atlantic Coast Conference in the recent past. Survivors are his wife, Janet Bass Harmon of the home and a native of Four Oaks, N.C.; son, Blair Harmon Crass of Sheppard Air Force Base, Texas; parents, Bill and Barbara Harmon of Norfolk; and brother, Mike Harmon of Petersburg, Va. A memorial service is planned at 11 a.m. Thursday at New Hope Baptist Church, Louisburg Road, Raleigh. Visitation will be today from 7 to 9 p.m. at West and Dunn Funeral Home, Benson, N.C. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross or to New Hope Baptist Church.
EURE -- Stephen Drew Piland, 20, of Tinkham Road, died April 26, 2003 as the result of injuries received in an automobile accident. Drew was born in Franklin, Va. and was a student at Chowan College in Murfreesboro. He was employed part-time with Dr. Peggy Johnston at the Gates County Animal Clinic. Drew now joins those who preceded him in death, his paternal grandparents, Henry and Helen Piland; his mother, Renae Johnson Piland on Oct. 20, 2000; and his maternal grandfather, Lewis Carlton Johnson on Aug. 12, 2002. Surviving are his father, Stephen R. Piland; brother, Cole Piland; maternal grandmother, Katie Johnson; maternal great-grandmother, Gertrude Smith; maternal step great-grandmother, Garnett Johnson all of Eure; and uncles, Scott Johnson of Eure, Carl Piland and wife Connie of Winton and Keith Piland and wife Wanda of Cofield. A graveside service will be held today at 3 p.m. in the Winton Baptist Church Cemetery by Dr. Charles Harris and the Rev. Wayne Gardner. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, has charge of arrangements. Friends may join the family at the residence, 67 Tinkham Road, or at the home of his great-grandmother, Gertrude Smith, 210 Tinkham Road. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Eure Christian Church, Winton Baptist Church, the Winton Rescue Squad or the Eure Volunteer Fire Dept.
