Virginian-PilotMay 14, 2003Garland E. Bowen WILLIAMSTON -- Garland Elihu Bowen, 76, of the 200 block of Oak St., died May 12, 2003 in Martin General Hospital, Williamston. Born in Washington County, he was a retired carpenter for Hoy Construction retiring in 1991. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was married on Feb. 24, 1954 to Selma Roberson Bowen who died March 19, 1984. He lived and worked most of his adult life in Chesapeake. He retired and moved back to Martin County in 1991. He was predeceased by a brother, Roy Bowen and a sister, Elvie Bunch. He is survived by a daughter, Marie Anne Boyd of Washington, N.C.; a sister, Ethel Browning of Plymouth, N.C.; a brother, Harvey Bowen of Windsor, N.C.; grandchildren, Gary Lee Boyd Jr. and Shelia Boyd Robbins; great-grandchildren, Craig Alan Boyd, Zachary DeWayne Robbins, Savannah and Grace Boyd; great-great-grandchild, Lauren Alexis Boyd. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today at Biggs Chapel in Williamston by the Rev. Roger Leggett and the Rev. Ralph Leggett. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery.
