Virginian-PilotMay 24, 2003Celia C. Chappell TYNER -- Celia Copeland Chappell, 81, of the 200 block of Jordan Loop Road, died May 22, 2003 in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City. Mrs. Chappell was born in Chowan County and was the daughter of the late Dempsey and Achsa Dail Copeland. A homemaker, she was a member of Hunter's Fork Pentecostal Holiness Church for more than 48 years and at the time of her death was a member of Lighthouse Tabernacle Holiness Church. Preceded in death by her husband, the Rev. Lucius T. Chappell, she is survived by a daughter, Carrie C. Byrum and husband Richard; two sons, Lucius Roy Chappell and wife Becky and David T. Chappell Sr., all of Tyner; 11 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Sunday at 4 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Edenton, by the Rev. Lucius Roy ``Chap'' Chappell Jr., the Rev. Archie Callahan, the Rev. Irvin B. Ambrose Jr., and the Rev. Lester Smith. Burial will follow in Happy Home Pentecostal Holiness Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and other times at the home of her son, Lucius Roy Chappell, 235 Jordan Loop Road, Tyner.
EDENTON -- William Samuel Clements Jr., 79, of the 100 block of W. Albemarle St., died May 23, 2003 in Chowan Hospital. A Celebration of Mr. Clements' life will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday in Beaver Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Randy Pierce officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today and at other times at the home of Carolyn and Larry Wilson, 1245 Macedonia Road in Edenton. RALEIGH -- Joseph Anthony Edmondson, 55, died May 22, 2003. Mr. Edmondson was born in Tarboro, N.C., lived in Scotland Neck and Virginia Beach prior to living in Raleigh and graduated from East Carolina University. He was retired from North Carolina State University's transportation department. Mr. Edmondson is survived by his wife, Bonnie; daughters, Karen and Sarah; parents, George H. and Urlean Edmondson; brothers, Cal, Steve and Jim; and two grandchildren, Jason and Alexis. A funeral was on Friday, May 23, 2003 in the chapel of North Raleigh Funeral Home. The family received friends prior to the service. THOMASVILLE -- Mildred Inez Shaw, 84, of the 1800 block of Augusta Drive, formerly of Salem Street, died May 22, 2003 in the Thomasville Medical Center. She was born Dec. 8, 1918 in Chesterfield County, S.C., a daughter of the late Frank Leslie Shaw and Emma B. Clanton Shaw. Miss Shaw was a resident of Virginia Beach from 1942 to 1992, where she retired as personnel manager for the Civil Personnel Offices of Navy Public Works Center, Naval Base, Norfolk. Following her retirement, she was a special friend and caregiver to Mr. and Mrs. D.B. Smith Sr. of Virginia Beach. While in Virginia, she was a charter and active member of Bayside Christian United Church of Christ at Virginia Beach. After returning to North Carolina, she became a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church in Thomasville. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Doris Furr and brothers, Williard Shaw and Melvin Shaw. Surviving are sisters, Sara Hopper of Charlotte and Mary Evelyn Pierce and husband Vernon of Thomasville; a brother, J.B. Shaw and wife Ethel of Garner, N.C.; a sister-in-law, Thelma Shaw of Asheville, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. A funeral will be held Sunday at 3 p.m. in Mount Pleasant UMC with the Rev. Ardis D. Payne officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Miss Shaw will remain at the J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home until she is taken to the church 30 minutes prior to the service. The family will receive friends at the funeral home today from 7 to 9 p.m. and other times at the home, 1800 Augusta Drive. ELIZABETH CITY -- Elizabeth Whitehurst Temple, 89, of the 300 block of Fire Tower Road, died May 23, 2003 in Guardian Care of Elizabeth City. Mrs. Temple was born in Camden County and was the daughter of the late Alonza Wilson and Alice Virginia Whitehurst. A homemaker, she was a member of Newland United Methodist Church. Preceded in death by her husband, William Joseph Temple, she is survived by a daughter, Jeanette T. Pridgen of Elizabeth City; a son, Billy Wade Temple and wife Emily of Texas City, Texas; a sister, Marie Swiggett and husband Henry of Danville, Va.; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Newland United Methodist Church by the Rev. Toni Wood, pastor. Burial will be in Memory Gardens Cemetery. Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, is in charge of arrangements. Friends may join the family at the home of her daughter, 388 Fire Tower Road, Elizabeth City.
