Van R. Davis

PORTSMOUTH -- Van Roger Davis of the 3700 block of Lilac Drive died May 27, 2003 at Maryview Medical Center.

Born in Enfield, N.C., he retired after 27 years as a solid waste manager from the City of Norfolk. He was also employed as a machinist at Cylinder Head Factory. He was a Baptist and a member of Mount Carmel Baptist Church, Norfolk.

He is survived by his wife, Brenda Howard Davis of Chesapeake; three daughters, Lucinda Johnson and husband Jeffrey of Virginia Beach, LaTonya Davis Brown of Portsmouth and Sonya Fleming and husband Robert of Portsmouth; mother, Weezie Davis of Virginia Beach; a sister, Phyllis Vann and husband Arthur of Virginia Beach; six brothers, Raymond Davis Jr. and wife Peggy of Danville, Calif., Dennis Davis Sr. and wife Barbara of Virginia Beach, Barry Davis and wife Jamie of Norfolk, Jerry Davis Sr. and wife Tarra, Ronald Davis and wife Cynthia and Tyrone Davis and wife Belinda, all of Virginia Beach; five grandchildren, Virgie Johnson, Erica Googman, Breauna Spivey, Jessica Johnson and Amnity Brown; aunt, Ida Price of New York; uncle, Marcus Guy and wife Louise; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Raymond F. Davis Sr.

A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Mount Carmel Baptist Church, 1101 Church St., by Bishop V.C. Russell. Burial will be in Meadowbrook Memorial Park. The remains will be ready for viewing today from 3:30 to 8 p.m. The family will assemble at 2731 Lilac Drive at 10 a.m. Saturday for the procession. Carlos A. Pauline L. Chappell

TYNER -- Pauline Lane ``Polly'' Chappell, 78, of the 800 block of County Line Road, died Wednesday morning, May 28, 2003 in her home.

Born in Perquimans County, she was the widow of Obed Alphonso Chappell and the daughter of the late William Henry and Mary Claude Jones Lane. She was the retired co-owner/operator of O.A. Chappell Grocery and a member of Chappell Hill Baptist Church and its Baptist Women.

Survivors include a son, Terry L. Chappell and wife Nona of Hertford; a stepdaughter, LaRue Fazio and husband John of Miami, Fla.; two sisters, Lizzie Boyce of Hertford and Arnie Copeland of Edenton; three brothers, William E. Lane of Hertford, James L. Lane and Claude Elson Lane, both of Tyner; two grandchildren, four stepgrandchildren and eight step great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Swindell Funeral Home and other times at her residence. A funeral will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. in Chappell Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Bobby Armstrong. Burial will follow in Cedar Wood Cemetery with Swindell Funeral Home assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Chappell Hill Baptist Church Building Fund, 892 County Line Road, Tyner, NC 27980.
