Virginian-PilotJune 10, 2003Lula P. Greene PORTSMOUTH -- Lula Poindexter Greene, 88, of Turnpike Road, died Monday, June 9, 2003 in Lillian's Loving Care Home, Portsmouth. She was born in Yadkin County, N.C., July 10, 1914 to Ina Taylor and William Henry Poindexter Sr. She retired in 1982 as a sales associate from The Famous with 17 years of service. Mrs. Greene was a member of Port Norfolk Baptist Church, Portsmouth, and the Churchland Woman's Club. Her loving husband of 53 years, Aldie Duke Greene III, four sisters, Clara Poindexter, Helen P. Dixon, Laura P. Ratledge, Ina P. Vermeulen and three brothers, Robert A. Poindexter, Thomas W. Poindexter and William H. Poindexter Jr., preceded Mrs. Greene in death. Survivors include her daughter, Elizabeth G. McKinney and her husband Roy H. of Smithfield; granddaughter, Shelley Leigh McKinney of Windsor; sister, Mildred P. Johnson of Pfafftown, N.C.; three great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A visitation will be held Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. in Colonial Funeral Home, Smithfield. Wilson of the 200 block of Dale Drive died June 7, 2003. A native of Carthage, N.C., she was the widow of Claude Wilson and retired from Gaylords Drapes. She was a member of Third Baptist Church and its C.H. Jordan Flower Club. She was also a member of Courts of Calanthe, Lydia No. 272, Order of the Eastern Star No. 52, United Order of Tents JRG and JU and Tent Lodge No. 139. Survivors include two daughters, Rosie B. Gary and Annie R. Borel, both of Portsmouth; two sons, Harrison Campbell (Willie Mae) of Fayetteville, N.C., and Lawrence D. Wilson (Susie) of Omaha, Neb.; a sister, Martha McNeil of Carthage, N.C.; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Third Baptist Church by the Rev. Joe B. Fleming. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Chesapeake. Chancey Wells Walker Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH -- Chancey Wells Walker Jr. died June 9, 2003. He was born in Atkinson, N.C., in 1912 and is survived by his son, Chancey Wells Walker III and wife Linda; three grandchildren, Peggy Ettel and husband Chris, Michael Wells Walker, and Kelley Ross and husband David. He also has four great-grandchildren, Chandler and Michael Ettel, Ellen and Walker Ross. Mr. Walker retired from the Navy after 26 years of service, starting his career on the battleships Texas and Wyoming, and then destroyers once being declared dead after his ship was destroyed during World War II. He served during the Korean Conflict on troop transports and ended his Naval career at Little Creek Amphibious Base. He also retired from civil service at Little Creek. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Charles Catholic Church Social Ministry, Cape Charles, Va., would be greatly appreciated. Russell SUFFOLK -- Mary Belle Lane Russell, 66, died June 8, 2003. Mrs. Russell was a homemaker and a native of Gates County, N.C. She was predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Stanley Horton Russell and was the daughter of the late Oscar George and Sallie Duck Lane. She was a member of Great Fork Baptist Church where she attended the Ruth Bible Sunday School Class, and a member of WMU and Keenagers Senior Citizens Group. Survivors include her sisters, Marie L. Mathias of Corapeake, N.C., Brenda R. Lane of Suffolk, and Debra A. Long and husband Gene of Anchorage, Alaska; brothers, William O. Lane and wife Florence of Waverly, Va., James D. Lane and wife Veronica of Suffolk, England, Herbert B. Lane and wife Thelma of Corapeake; stepsons, Stanley Parker Russell and wife Diane of Suffolk and Joe Wesley Russell of Franklin; daughter-in-law, Ruby B. Russell of Suffolk; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a stepson, George Ray Russell and brother, Robert L. Lane. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Great Fork Baptist Church by the Rev. Jonathan Judy. Interment will be in Great Fork Baptist Church Cemetery. AYDEN -- Carlton Gray Perry, 69, known as Sweet Potato Man, died June 7, 2003, in Pitt County Memorial Hospital. Born on Jan. 8, 1934, he was preceded in death by his parents, John and Goldie Perry formerly of Colerain; brothers, Howard, Leon and Ken Perry; and a twin sister, Carolyn Perry. He enjoyed raising watermelons, sweet potatoes and cows. He was retired from A&P Grocery Stores. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Peggy Dunlow Perry; his children, Carlton Perry Jr. (Kink) and wife Linda of Ayden, Debbie Jackson and husband Leroy of Winterville, Jerry Wayne Perry and wife Kathy of Walstonburg, Tammy Fleming and husband David of Greenville; a brother, Mack Perry of Burleston, Texas; and a sister, Louise Miller of Windsor; nine grandchildren; and a great-grandchild. AVON -- David Alan Scarborough, 42, died June 8, 2003, in his residence. Mr. Scarborough was born in Jacksonville, Fla., and had also lived in the Norfolk and Virginia Beach areas. David was a 1979 graduate of Cox High School and was a commercial waterman. He served his country honorably in the U.S. Coast Guard. He was the son of Lester R. and Judy Gray Scarborough of Virginia Beach. Besides his parents, surviving are a brother, Michael L. Scarborough of Avon and Virginia Beach; maternal grandparents, Erving and Mary Gray of Elizabeth City; and his companion, Debbie Brill; several aunts, uncles and cousins. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday in Avon Worship Center by the Rev. Troy Freeman. Burial will be in the Scarborough Cemetery, Avon. The body will be taken to the church on Thursday. MOYOCK -- Fred Stiles, 75, died June 7, 2003, in Chesapeake General Hospital. He was born Sept. 4, 1927 in Bowling Green, Ky., to the late George Homer and Charlotte Cherry Stiles. Fred was a retired chief from the U.S. Navy having served for 22 years and was also an active member of Providence Baptist Church, Shawboro, N.C. He also worked for 10 years in the Navy Reseal Systems Office and 10 years with Ogden Allied Services as regional sales manager. Mr. Stiles loved leading people to the Lord, his family and commercial fishing and gardening. Survivors include his wife of more than 25 years, Patricia Stiles; two daughters, Myra Stiles Richmond of Bowling Green and Beverly Stiles Ludford of Virginia Beach; a son, Donald Frederick Stiles of Knotts Island, N.C.; a sister, Elsie Dubree of Bowling Green; two brothers, Gale Stiles and Harvey Stiles, both of Bowling Green; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday in Twiford Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake, with the Rev. Charles Stevens officiating. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m.
GATES -- Harriett Virginia Byrum ``Jennie'' Windley, 92, of NC Hwy. 37, went to join her Heavenly family on Monday, June 9, 2003, from Nansemond Pointe Convalescent Center in Suffolk. Mrs. Windley was born in Chowan County and was the daughter of the late Richard Henry Sr. and Harriett Virginia Nixon Byrum. A homemaker, she was formerly a member of Alexander Baptist Church in Portsmouth and the Rocky Hock Baptist Church near Edenton, N.C., and was currently a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church in Aulander, N.C. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Charles T. Windley; a son, Carlton R. Windley; and two grandsons, Mark Skeens and Dr. Jack Young. Surviving are two daughters, Shirley Young and husband Louis and Carole Skeens and husband Bobby, all of Gates; a son, Wayne Windley of Portsmouth; daughter-in-law, Linda Windley of Sugarland, Texas; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, by the Rev. Bobby Skeens. Burial will be at 1 p.m. in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens, Cedar Road, Chesapeake. Friends may join the family today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the funeral home and all other times at the home of her daughter, Carole Skeens in Gates.
