Born in Elizabeth City, N.C., she retired in 2000 as a hospital food specialist after 41 years with DePaul Medical Center. She was educated at P.W. Monroe High School, Elizabeth City. She was the daughter of Maedell Brockett and Roosevelt Jordan. She was predeceased by her husband, Samuel Gibbs Jr. Surviving are a daughter, Ferteama H. Brown of Virginia Beach; three sons, Donald T. Gibbs of Suitland, Md., Darald T. Gibbs of Chester, Pa. and Dwaynald S. Gibbs of Norfolk; a sister, E. Vernice Saunders; an aunt, Mildred Stanley; and an uncle, James A. Stanley. A funeral will be held at noon Thursday by the Rev. Alice A. Montogomery at Metropolitan Funeral Services. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Frederick E. King NORFOLK -- Frederick E. King, 74, died June 9, 2003. He was a native of Kinston, N.C., and a longtime resident of Moyock, N.C. He retired with more than 50 years of devoted service from Norfolk and Portsmouth Belt Line and was always a dedicated railroad employee. His daughter, Nancy Webb and granddaughter, Kylie Webb of Virginia Beach and a sister, Mary Lou Brown of Las Vegas, Nev. survive him. He was a loving father and grandfather who gave of himself unconditionally. Your memory will live in our hearts forever. Altmeyer Funeral Home, Virginia Beach, is handling arrangements. Robert G. McNeill NORFOLK -- Robert ``Bob'' G. McNeill, 66, passed away June 10, 2003 at Norfolk General Hospital. Mr. McNeill was born in Fayetteville, N.C., to the late John Steadman McNeill and Letha Smith McNeill and was also predeceased by his first wife, Lillian McNeill. He had retired from the U.S. Navy after 20 years of honorable service in which he served during the Vietnam and Korean wars. After his military career, he worked as a heavy equipment mechanic and was a longtime employee of Woodlawn Memorial Gardens in Norfolk. He was an avid bowler at Norfolk AMF Lanes and a member of the American Legion No. 327. He is survived by his loving wife of 13 years, Janet A. McNeill; a son, Allen McNeill and wife Lorie of Pennsylvania; two stepdaughters, JoAnne Jackson and husband Jerry of Staunton, Va., and Hazel Partin and husband Harold of Virginia Beach; two stepsons, James William Painter and wife Debbie of Staunton and Durwood Griffin of Churchville, Va.; 16 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a sister, Naomi Scott and husband Brewster of Stuart, Va.; and a brother, Glenn McNeill and wife Hazel of Red Springs, N.C. A funeral will be held Thursday at 10 a.m. in the chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home and Crematory. Burial with full military honors will follow at Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends and relatives at the funeral home today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Daniel J. Black Jr. VIRGINIA BEACH -- Daniel James Black Sr., 66, passed away June 8, 2003. A native of Sanford, N.C., he was born to the late Daniel Hugh and Alma Edna Gaines Black. He was raised in Berkley and co-founded the Berkley Social Club. A veteran of the United States Army, he retired as a systems analyst after 36 years with civil service. Dan was a dedicated member of the Khedive Shrine Temple, the Drum and Bugle Corps and the Scottish Rite Bodies. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason. He very much enjoyed coaching many of the youth of Virginia Beach, and his leadership ability helped three teams win city championships. Dan was an avid golfer, accomplished trivia buff and a member of the Virginia Beach Shag Club. He is survived by a son, Daniel James Black Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; a grandson, Daniel James Black III of Canandaigua, N.Y.; two sisters, Nellie V. Smith of Collington Harbor, N.C. and Bettye Gilpin of Newport News; and two brothers, John Vernon Black of Augusta, Ga. and William L. Black of Chesapeake. A memorial service will be held Thursday at 4 p.m. in Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, with Minister L.M. Margaret C. Hunt VIRGINIA BEACH -- Margaret Cuthrell Hunt, 89, went to be with the Lord on June 10, 2003. Born April 14, 1914 in Belhaven, N.C., she graduated from Selma High School in 1931 and East Carolina Teachers College in 1934. Margaret was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Joseph Henry Hunt; a brother, Allen Cuthrell; and sister, Rosa Lee Schwab. Margaret resided in Lynnhaven Village since 1945. She was a very active member of Lynnhaven Presbyterian Church for 58 years. Margaret's affiliation with the church began in the choir, Circle No. 2, president of the Women's Council and Vacation Bible School teacher. She was always involved in volunteer work as a room mother, school PTA, Junior Womens Club 1950, Demonstration Club president in 1953, Daughters of America (rising to state councilor in 1992) and Princess Ann Circle of the Kings Daughters. Margaret worked for the original Virginia Beach Hospital on 25th Street as a receptionist for doctor's Taylor and Dormire until 1973. She is survived by her brother, Hiram Cuthrell of Salisbury N.C.; a daughter, Rose Ellen (Hunt) Nowlan; son-in-law, Joseph G. Nowlan; grandchildren, Kathleen Norton, Ronald and Jennifer Nowlan and Warren and Catherine Nowlan; and seven great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank her caregiver, Shirley Carter. Maranger VIRGINIA BEACH -- Doreen Harrell Maranger, 78, of the 500 block of Heather Drive, died June 9, 2003. Born in Merry Hill, N.C., Mrs. Maranger served as a nurse during the Korean War in the U.S. Air Force. She also served as a bio-feedback therapist and as a registered nurse at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital, DePaul Medical Center and the Portsmouth Psychiatric Center. She was a member and served on the Alter Guild of Emmanuel Episcopal Church. Survivors include her husband of more than 50 years, George J. Maranger; two sons, George Keith Maranger of Hazelhurst, Miss. and Bruce Keven Maranger of Virginia Beach; two granddaughters, Melanie and Annalea; a brother, J.T. Harrell of Merry Hill; and two sisters, Elizabeth Bunch of Edenton, N.C. and Lucy H. Byrum of Elizabethton, Tenn.. Miller, 79, went to be with the Lord on June 10, 2003 after a long and courageous battle with his illness. Joe was born in Old Fort, N.C. on Nov. 22, 1923 to Burroughs Charles Miller and Carrie Lytle Miller. He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, B.C. Miller Jr. and a sister, Frances Ansell. He served three years in the U.S. Army during World War II, including two years in the European Theater. In 1972 after 30 years of service, Joe retired from the U.S. Post Office as assistant postmaster of Virginia Beach. Joe was also a master Mason at the Virginia Beach Lodge No. 274 AF&AM. Joe liked to fish and hunt and was a member of the Bullhead Hunt Club in Appomattox, Va. In 1975, Joe and his longtime friend, Nick Nicholson, originated the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad Oyster Roast. Joe is survived by his wife, Margot ``Peggy'' Miller; his stepchildren, Kim Rabey, Wade Rabey, Tracye D'Auria and her husband Mario, Robin Forbes and her husband Gilbert and Brett Rabey and his wife Suzi; his grandchildren, Lauren and Jenna D'Auria, Caitlin and Grant Forbes and Jackson and Ryan Rabey; two brothers, Fred Miller and his wife Mary of Cape Coral, Fla. and Lloyd Miller and his wife Bonnie of Old Fort, N.C.; along with many nieces and nephews. A special thanks to Dr. Janice Sherwood, Lynn Wiles, Rose Serrano, Linda Badgely and all of his friends and neighbors for their care, love and support. Joe left his body to the Virginia Anatomical Program for research. A memorial service will be at Kings Grant Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. Friday. Anderson MOORESVILLE -- Irene Michele Anderson, beloved wife of Ernie Anderson, was born Dec. 28, 1956 in Olathe, Kan. She died June 8, 2003 as a result of an airplane accident. She was a flight attendant for U.S. Airways for 20 years and received numerous awards for excellent service. She was also a certified flight instructor who trained many young pilots. She is survived by her parents, Dorothy and Ray Levesque of Virginia Beach and Gene Trayer of Lexington, S.C. She is also survived by her brothers, Gene and Phil and a sister, Tricia. Irene had numerous nieces and nephews who will miss her joyful spirit. Irene received a BA from Old Dominion University in international business with a minor in German language studies. Her life was exemplary and well-lived. Her generosity was a model for all of us. In lieu of flowers, please send a donation to the Humane Society of Charlotte, P.O. Box 221028, Charlotte, NC 28222, as Irene was known for her love and care of dogs and cats. A service in her honor will be held today at 1 p.m. at St. Patrick's Episcopal Church in Mooresville, near the Lake Norman Regional Medical Center at Exit 33 off of I-77. GATES -- Clarine Winslow Casper, 77, formerly of US Hwy 13, died June 10, 2003 in Obici Hospital, Suffolk. Mrs. Casper was born in Perquimans County and was the daughter of the late Josiah and Martha Emma Winslow. A homemaker, she was a member of Up River Friends Meeting. She is survived by two daughters, Florence Odom of Suffolk and Hilda Butler of Elizabethtown, N.C.; three sons, Robert V. ``Bobby'' Casper Jr. of Glen Allen, Va., Lester Casper of Suffolk and Greg Casper of Gates; a sister, Iona Wilder of Belvidere; a brother, Charles Winslow of Hertford; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a special nephew, Cecil Casper. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Robert V. Casper Sr. and a son, Carlton Ray ``Big Red'' Casper. A funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Miller Funeral
