Virginia P. Roberts

CHESAPEAKE -- Virginia Powell Roberts, 82, of the 2100 block of Rodgers Street, died May 30, 2003 at Chesapeake General Hospital.

Born in Gates County, N.C., Mrs. Roberts was the daughter of the late Arentha B. and Maude Jones Powell and the widow of Alexander (Bob) Roberts Jr. She was a graduate of the St. Vincent DePaul Hospital School of Nursing. Mrs. Roberts retired after 20 years of service as a registered nurse from Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was a member of South Norfolk Christian Church where she was a member and past president of the Dorcas Class.

Mrs. Roberts is survived by a son, Michael Powell Roberts and wife Denise; a daughter, Andrea Roberts Conway; a sister, Lucile Harrell; two grandchildren, Kristin Leigh Roberts, a senior airman in the U.S. Air Force and Jason Lee Roberts and wife Monica; and two great-grandchildren, Tray Roberts and Vann Roberts, all of Chesapeake.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the chapel of Francis A. Gay Funeral Home, Chesapeake, by the Rev. Amos Eby. Interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m. today at the funeral home.

We love you Mom with all our hearts. We just weren't ready for your departure. We know you're in a finer place. Oh God, we'll miss her style and grace.

Irene Robinson

NORFOLK -- Irene Robinson of the 1400 block of Halstead Ave. died May 28, 2003 at DePaul Hospital. Born in Backwoods, N.C., she was a homemaker and a member of New Calvary Baptist Church.

She is survived by a great-niece, Cozia Sutton; a niece, Virginia Kearson, both of Chesapeake; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, www.carlosahowardfuneralhome.com. Evangelist Virginia Williams will officiate. Burial will be in Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, 3841 Bunch Walnuts Road, Chesapeake. The remains will be ready for viewing Monday from 3:30 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home where the family will assemble at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Patricia F. Suraci

NORFOLK -- Patricia ``Pat'' Ann Fenlon Suraci, 70, born in New York City, passed away in Bon Secours-DePaul Hospital on May 30, 2003. Pat was a long-standing member of Christ The King Catholic Church of Norfolk. After retirement and moving to Edenton, N.C., Pat and husband Joe, became members of St. Anne's Catholic Church.

Pat is survived by her loving husband, Joseph Suraci; daughters, Kathleen Gurecki and husband Don of Norfolk, JoAnn Brooks and husband Warren of Suffolk, Mary Cormier and husband Al and Susun Laswick and husband Paul all of Richmond; and beloved grandchildren, Kevin Gurecki, Christopher and Sarah Brooks and Selina and Ryan Cormier. She was predeceased by her parents, Edward and Clarice Fenlon.

Pat was a former member of the Franciscan Sisters of Baltimore, where she was known as Sister Mary Christina for over 20 years. She was principal of Christ The King Catholic School from 1963 to 1973. In 1990, Pat returned as principal, and served until her retirement in June 2000. An outstanding Catholic leader, Pat served as Regent of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas-- Local Regent Court 1212, from 1981 to 1987, followed by other offices held on the state level.

A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated Tuesday at 7 p.m. by the Rev. Brian Rafferty at Christ The King Catholic Church, 1803 Columbia Ave., Norfolk. Prior to Mass, the family will receive friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at the church. A graveside service will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at Forest Lawn Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, Pat's wishes were to have contributions made to Christ The King School ``Focus on the Future'' building campaign, 3401 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, VA 23509. H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel is handling the arrangements.

Lucille T. Wills

SUFFOLK -- Lucille Tobey Wills, 83, of Sunbridge Health Care, died May 30, 2003 in Chesapeake General Hospital.

Mrs. Wills was born in Memphis, Tenn., and was the daughter of the late Frank Thrall Tobey Sr., a former mayor of Memphis and Lucille Adams Tobey. She had taught at Bancroft School and Friends School, both in Haddonfield, N.J., and was a member of Tenth Presbyterian Church in Philadelphia, Pa.

Preceded in death by her husband, Robert Parnell Wills, she is survived by two daughters, Mary Wills Parker of Suffolk and Lucille Johnson of Charlestown, N.H.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A funeral will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Rev. Billy Presley. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Friends may join the family Tuesday from 7 to 8 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, N.C., and all other times at the home of her daughter, 160 Collins Road, Suffolk.

Kathleen H. Haltigan

KILL DEVIL HILLS -- Kathleen Haley Haltigan, 94, died May 28, 2003. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 12 in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va. Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, is in charge.

Richard E. Hurdle

HOBBSVILLE -- Richard Ephriam ``Dick'' Hurdle, 85, of the 1200 block of Acorn Hill Road, died May 31, 2003 in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.

Mr. Hurdle was born in Perquimans County and was the son of the late Alonza and Frances Bunch Hurdle. He had retired as the mill foreman of Younce and Ralph Lumber Co. in Belhaven, N.C., and was a member of Sandy Cross Baptist Church.

Preceded in death by his wife, Mildred Hollowell Hurdle, he is survived by two daughters, DiAnne H. Bryant and husband, Rosser of Franklin, Va., and Kathy Hurdle of Hobbsville; a son, Billy R. Hurdle of Clemmons, N.C.; and a granddaughter, Susan Bryant Rusnak and husband, Ben of Boca Raton, Fla.

A funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Sandy Cross Baptist Church by the Rev. E. Vernon Gilmer Jr. Burial will follow in Hobbsville Baptist Church Cemetery. Friends may join the family today from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, and all other times at the residence.

Virginia F. Marrow

PLYMOUTH -- Virginia Louise Franklin Marrow, 84, of Roper, died May 31, 2003. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Horner-Walker Funeral Home Chapel.

Martha B. Midgett

ELIZABETH CITY -- Martha Berry Midgett, 91, of the 700 block of Cedar St., died May 26, 2003 at 7:10 p.m. in the Ashton Woods Nursing Home, Atlanta, Ga.

She was born in Elizabeth City to the late Milton W. and Sophia Dozier Berry and was the widow of A. Parker Midgett. She formerly taught high school English and French in Franklin. Mrs. Midgett was a member of the City Road United Methodist Church, Golden Circle Sunday School Class and the Sunshine Ladies Circle.

She is survived by a daughter, Carole Sawyer and husband, Bruce of Dunwoody, Ga.; a son, Richard Morgan and wife, Tracey of Elizabeth City; a stepson, Robert P. Midgett and wife, Janet of Greensboro, N.C.; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, June 7 at 2 p.m. in the Twiford's Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, by the Rev. Charles McKenzie. Elizabeth K. Williams

GASTONIA -- Elizabeth Kennedy Williams, 87, of the 700 block of Lincolnshire Court, Chesapeake, and formerly of Downey Place, Gastonia, died May 29, 2003. A funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. at Colonial Chapel of Carothers Funeral Home, Gastonia.

Walter D. Williams

COLINGTON -- Walter David ``Dave'' Williams, 68, died May 31, 2003 in a Norfolk hospital. Mr. Williams, born in Elizabeth City, N.C., was a retired security guard and a member of the Outer Banks Worship Center. He was son of the late Walter Delmer and Madaline Quidley Williams.

Mr. Williams is survived by two sisters, Christine Young of Morganton, N.C., and Janice O'Neal of Colington; and one niece and three nephews.

A graveside service will be held in Hilltop Cemetery, Colington, Monday at 2 p.m. with the Rev. David Daniels officiating. The family will receive friends at Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, today from 7 to 8 p.m.

Lucille L. Winslow

SUNBURY -- Lucille Lane Winslow, 85, of the 100 block of Silver Springs Road, died May 30, 2003 in Winslow Memorial Home, Elizabeth City.

Mrs. Winslow was born in Perquimans County and was the daughter of the late Leonie L. and Mary Anna ``Mamie'' Stallings Lane. A retired clerk from Rose's 5-10-25 cents Store in Hertford, she was a member of Damascus Christian Church.

Preceded in death by her husband, Robert Carson Winslow on January 30 of this year, she is survived by two sons, Robert Lane Winslow and wife Robin and Barry Lee Winslow and wife, Marcia, all of Sunbury; a brother, Clyde Lane of Hertford; and three grandchildren, Hannah Elizabeth Winslow, Brandon Copeland Winslow and Shane Trenton Winslow.

A graveside service will be held Monday at 3 p.m. in Up River Cemetery by the Rev. Forrest Guthrie. Miller Funeral Home in Gatesville is in charge of arrangements. Friends may join the family at the residence.
