Virginian-PilotJune 12, 2003Daniel J. Black Sr. VIRGINIA BEACH -- Daniel James Black Sr., 66, passed away June 8, 2003. A native of Sanford, N.C., he was born to the late Daniel Hugh and Alma Edna Gaines Black. He was raised in Berkley and co-founded the Berkley Social Club. A veteran of the United States Army, he retired as a systems analyst after 36 years with civil service. Dan was a dedicated member of the Khedive Shrine Temple, the Drum and Bugle Corps and the Scottish Rite Bodies. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason. He very much enjoyed coaching many of the youth of Virginia Beach, and his leadership ability helped three teams win city championships. Dan was an avid golfer, accomplished trivia buff and a member of the Virginia Beach Shag Club. He is survived by a son, Daniel James Black Jr. of Atlanta, Ga.; a grandson, Daniel James Black III of Canandaigua, N.Y.; two sisters, Nellie V. Smith of Collington Harbor, N.C. and Bettye Gilpin of Newport News; and two brothers, John Vernon Black of Augusta, Ga. and William L. Black of Chesapeake. A memorial service will be held today at 4 p.m. in Graham Funeral Home, Greenbrier Chapel, with Minister L.M. Smith Jr. The family will receive friends today following the service at the home of Bill and Fran Black, 3205 Benefit Road, Chesapeake. Margaret C. Hunt VIRGINIA BEACH -- Margaret Cuthrell Hunt, 89, went to be with the Lord on June 9, 2003. Born April 14, 1914 in Belhaven, N.C., she graduated from Selma High School in 1931 and East Carolina Teachers College in 1934. Margaret was predeceased by her husband of 66 years, Joseph Henry Hunt; a brother, Allen Cuthrell; and sister, Rosa Lee Schwab. Margaret resided in Lynnhaven Village since 1945. She was a very active member of Lynnhaven Presbyterian Church for 58 years. Margaret's affiliation with the church began in the choir, Circle No. 2, president of the Women's Council and Vacation Bible School teacher. She was always involved in volunteer work as a room mother, school PTA, Junior Womens Club 1950, Demonstration Club president in 1953, Daughters of America (rising to state councilor in 1992) and Princess Ann Circle of the Kings Daughters. Margaret worked for the original Virginia Beach Hospital on 25th Street as a receptionist for doctor's Taylor and Dormire until 1973. She is survived by her brother, Hiram Cuthrell of Salisbury N.C.; a daughter, Rose Ellen (Hunt) Nowlan; son-in-law, Joseph G. Nowlan; grandchildren, Kathleen Norton, Ronald and Jennifer Nowlan and Warren and Catherine Nowlan; and seven great-grandchildren. The family wishes to thank her caregiver, Shirley Carter. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Kellum Funeral Home, 601 N. Witchduck Road. Services will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in the funeral home chapel with burial to follow at Rosewood Memorial Park. A reception will be held in the reception room at the funeral home afterwards. Miller, 79, went to be with the Lord on June 10, 2003 after a long and courageous battle with his illness. Joe was born in Old Fort, N.C. on Nov. 22, 1923 to Burroughs Charles Miller and Carrie Lytle Miller. He was predeceased by his parents, a brother, B.C. Miller Jr. and a sister, Frances Ansell. He served three years in the U.S. Army during World War II, including two years in the European Theater. In 1972 after 30 years of service, Joe retired from the U.S. Post Office as assistant postmaster of Virginia Beach. Joe was also a master Mason at the Virginia Beach Lodge No. 274 AF&AM. Joe liked to fish and hunt and was a member of the Bullhead Hunt Club in Appomattox, Va. In 1975, Joe and his longtime friend, Nick Nicholson, originated the Virginia Beach Rescue Squad Oyster Roast. Joe is survived by his wife, Margot ``Peggy'' Miller; his stepchildren, Kim Rabey, Wade Rabey, Tracye D'Auria and her husband Mario, Robin Forbes and her husband Gilbert and Brett Rabey and his wife Suzi; his grandchildren, Lauren and Jenna D'Auria, Caitlin and Grant Forbes and Jackson and Ryan Rabey; two brothers, Fred Miller and his wife Mary of Cape Coral, Fla. and Lloyd Miller and his wife Bonnie of Old Fort, N.C.; along with many nieces and nephews. A special thanks to Dr. Janice Sherwood, Lynn Wiles, Rose Serrano, Linda Badgely and all of his friends and neighbors for their care, love and support. Joe left his body to the Virginia Anatomical Program for research. A memorial service will be held at Kings Grant Presbyterian Church at 2 p.m. Friday. The family will receive visitors in the church fellowship hall immediately following the service. Riddick SUFFOLK -- Margaret Louise Brinkley Riddick, 88, died June 10, 2003. A native of Gates County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Hersey Cleveland Brinkley and Selma Rebecca Lilly Brinkley. She was also predeceased by her husband of 45 years, Wallace C. Riddick Jr.; daughter, Margaret Faye Casey; granddaughter, Valerie Faye Suits; and sister, Thelma Hope Hawkins. She retired as a licensed practical nurse from Maryview Medical Center in Portsmouth. She was a member of Suffolk Christian Church where she attended the West Memorial Bible Class and Women's Fellowship Group. She also attended the Senior Fellowship Group and Saints Alive. Ms. Riddick also recently attended Portlock Methodist Church in Chesapeake and a member of the Gates County Historical Society and a RSVP Voluntary Action Red Cross volunteer. Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Rebecca Rose Riddick and Claude M. Faulkner of Wilson, N.C.; sons and daughters-in-law, Wallace Council Riddick III and Charlotte Ardeen Riddick of Chesapeake and Charles Bobby and Joanne Umphlette of Suffolk; six grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Suffolk Christian Church. Family will also receive friends after the service at the church. The Rev. Michael D. Halley and the Rev. Robert B. Marr will officiate. Interment will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Nansemond-Suffolk Rescue Squad, to the Suffolk Christian Church or to Portlock Methodist Church in Chesapeake. Parr Funeral Home is serving the family. Ilse J. Spivey SUFFOLK -- Ilse Johanna Spivey, 63, died June 10, 2003, in Obici Hospital. Born Jan. 25, 1940 in Mannheim, Germany, she was the daughter of Elsa Klamm Weber of Germany and the late Hugo Weber. Mrs. Spivey was a tea packer for Lipton tea. Besides her mother, she is survived by her husband, Elwood Lee Spivey; daughter and son-in-law, Ursula and Robert Stell of Hobbsville, N.C.; sons and daughters-in-law, Pete and Amy Weber of Corapeake, N.C., James and Dawn Spivey of Windsor, Va., Michael Wayne and Ronice Spivey of Marietta, Ga.; several brothers and sisters in Germany; grandchildren, Cody Weber, Krissy Small, Tommy Small, Katelynn Stell, Jacob Ericson, Kyle Ericson, Maria, Angel, Jamie and Justin Spivey. A funeral will be held Friday at 2 p.m. in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home and Crematory by the Rev. Raymond Hampton with burial in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens.
