Stephen S. Leary

CHESAPEAKE -- Stephen Sewell ``Steve'' Leary, 76, formerly of Ahoskie, N.C., died June 12, 2003. A graveside service will be held today at 3 p.m. in Ahoskie Cemetery. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.

Aline I. Hardee

NORFOLK -- Aline Ivey Hardee, 91, died June 12, 2003 at her home on Ramsey Road.

Mrs. Hardee was born in Boardman, N.C., the daughter of Haynes and Curlee S. Ivey on April 10, 1912. She was predeceased by her husband, Allen Wayman Hardee and a grandson, John Allen Hardee Jr.

She is survived by her children, Peggy H. Measell and husband G. Sam Measell of Richmond, Va., Betty H. Hall of Norfolk, John Allen Hardee and wife Barbara C. Hardee of Virginia Beach; sisters, Mildred I. Jacobs of Virginia Beach, Cathy I. Piland and husband Pebble O. Piland of Virginia Beach; sister-in-law, Inez N. Ivey of Norfolk; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, three great-great-grandchildren; and many beloved nieces and nephews.

She lived and reared her children in Lumberton, N.C., and moved to Norfolk in 1950. She was employed by Smith and Welton department store and Frank R. Ford Jewelers. She was an active member of Talbot Park Baptist Church since 1951 and was a longstanding member of the Bethany Bible Class, the Woman's Missionary Union and the Chancel Choir.

A memorial service will be held Friday, June 20, 2003 at Talbot Park Baptist Church at 1 p.m. by Dr. Tim Dixon and the Rev. Keith Martin. A reception for family and friends will be held immediately following the service in the church social hall. Memorial donations may be made in her memory to the American Cancer Society or Talbot Park Baptist Church, 6919 Granby St., Norfolk, VA 23505.

Marry Lee Moore

NORFOLK -- Marry Lee Moore of the 1000 block of Hugo St. died June 10, 2003 in Sentara Leigh Memorial Hospital.

A native of Ayden, N.C., she was the widow of Phill J. Moore Sr. and was a private companion/child care provider for the High's ice cream family. She was a member of Faith Community Church and the Norview Civic League.

Survivors include two daughters, Charlean Moore of Norfolk and Brenda Trumble and husband Earnest of Newport News; five sons, Donald Moore of Washington, D.C., Gregory Moore, Phill J. Moore and Eric Moore, all of Norfolk and Russell Moore and wife Sharon of Newport News; three sisters, Icelean Lowery, Peggy Jones and Virgie N. Frye, all of Washington, D.C.; a brother, John L. Brown and wife Ethel of Langley Park, Md.; 15 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk, www.carlosahowardfuneralhome.com, by Pastor Ola Moore. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery, Hampton. The remains will be ready for viewing Sunday from 3:30 to 8 p.m. The family will assemble at the funeral home at 10:15 a.m. Monday to receive friends for the service.

Alvester Whitaker

NEWPORT NEWS -- Alvester Whitaker, a native of Hertford County, N.C., died June 12, 2003. A funeral will be held Monday at 1 p.m. in Zion Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Aulander, N.C. Reynolds Funeral Home is in charge.
