Iris H. Arkerson

NORFOLK -- Hope Arkerson, 83, of the 700 block of W. 48th St., passed away June 7, 2003 in his home.

He was a native of Knotts Island, N.C., and was the son of the late Leonard and Mattie Arkerson. Hope was a veteran of the U.S. Merchant Marines, serving as a seaman during World War II, Korea and Vietnam, after which he became a painter. He was member of the American Legion Post 60.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Guy Arkerson; a sister, Page Tillett of Cockeysville, Md.; several nieces and nephews; and his little companion, Smokey.

A memorial service will be conducted at 6 p.m. Thursday in Emmanuel Presbyterian Church, 4700 Colley Ave., Norfolk.


Arthur C. Hurtubise

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Arthur C. Hurtubise, 85, formerly of Hertford, N.C., went to be with his Lord on June 14, 2003. He was born in Hopewell, Va., on July 17, 1917 to Eugenia and James Hurtubise. He was a 1937 graduate of Maury High School. He retired from civil service after 20 years at the Norfolk Naval Shipyard.

In his retirement, he was an active member of the Sixty Plus Club in Ocean View which he loved and enjoyed so much. He was also a former member of the Portsmouth Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his first wife, Frances Cline of St. Augustine, Fla.; and their six children, Martha Fischer of Jacksonville, Fla., Faye Wimberly of St. Augustine, Fla., Donna Smith and her husband George of Virginia Beach, Jim Hurtubise and his wife Donna of Zephyrhills, Fla., Tammy Stevens and her husband John of Leesburg, Va., and John Hurtubise of Jacksonville. He was a blessed man with 20 incredible grandchildren, 10 awesome great-grandchildren and two precious great-great-grandchildren.

A service to honor his life will be held at 11 a.m. today at Virginia Beach Christian Life Center, where he attended, located at 1000 N. Great Neck Road in Virginia Beach. Kellum Funeral Home is in charge.

The family requests that any memorial donations be made to the local SPCA where Arthur found a loving and faithful friend, his special dog Digby, who brought great joy to his life these past few years.

Alton L. Roberson

VIRGINIA BEACH -- Alton Leroy Roberson, 92, went home to his Heavenly Father on Father's Day, June 15, 2003.

Al was born to the late Walter and Ophelia Roberson on June 1, 1911, in Nashville, N.C., and though he lived in Virginia most of his life, North Carolina was always close to his heart. He was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters, his son, Philip M. Foxwell Jr. and his son-in-law, Marshall W. Morrison Sr.

He will be deeply missed by his wife of 63 years, Flovian Foxwell ``Sally'' Roberson; his daughters, JoAnne Morrison and Sandra Johnson; and his daughter-in-law, Barbara Foxwell. His loving memory will be cherished by his four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a sister, Mildred Collins and husband Fred of Granville, Texas.

Mr. Roberson retired as president of Standard Office Supply in 1973 and thoroughly enjoyed every one of his 30 years of retirement. He was an accomplished woodworker, making many beautiful pieces of furniture and wonderful children's toys for family and friends. He had a generous spirit, always willing to give of his talent, his time, his resources and his wisdom.

The twinkle in his blue eyes and his white hair and beard were his outstanding physical features, but it was his Godly spirit that will be his legacy. He loved the Lord, his family and his church, Kempsville Presbyterian Church. Even in recent times of ill health, he always focused on God's goodness to him.

The bible says that long life is a blessing from God, and his long life has been treasured by his family. Though he is no longer with us the richness of his spirit will live on in each one of us.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Colonial Grove Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Wednesday at Kempsville Presbyterian Church from 2 to 3 p.m. where a memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. by the Rev. Dr. James Nowell. Ruby H. Archer

AHOSKIE -- Ruby H. Archer, 79, died June 15, 2003. A graveside service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday in Ahoskie Cemetery. Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, is in charge.


Mildred S. Burkett

ELIZABETH CITY -- Mildred Skinner Burkett, 95, of the 1700 block of W. Ehringhaus St., died June 15, 2003 in Winslow Memorial Home. She was born in Suffolk to the late Theodore and Lina Mae Norfleet Skinner and was the widow of Cecil R. Burkett. She was a member of Park View Baptist Church, Portsmouth.

Mrs. Burkett is survived by a son, Cecil R. Burkett Jr. of Camden, N.C.; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara Burkett Tanner.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Park View Baptist Church, Hatton Street, Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Park View Baptist Church or the church of one's choice. Twiford's Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, is in charge.


Dajhia A. Clark

Charlie F. Gray Jr.

PENDLETON -- Charlie Fenton Gray Jr., 72, died June 15, 2003. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Sykes Funeral Home, Rich Square, is in charge.


Florence P. Hewett

COLUMBIA -- Florence Gray Phillips Hewett, 88, died June 15, 2003. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Walker Funeral Home is in charge.


Charles A. Mauk

KILL DEVIL HILLS -- Charles A. Mauk, 62, formerly of Altoona, Pa., died June 14, 2003, at home after an extended illness.

He was born Nov. 12, 1940, in Altoona, a son of the late Charles E. and Florice Wertz Mauk.

Mr. Mauk was a graduate of Altoona High School and the University of Scranton, Pa. He retired as manager from Bell Atlantic in 1992. He was a member of the Altoona Chamber of Commerce, campaigned for the United Way of Blair County and served a term as president of the Altoona Symphony. While living in Pennsylvania, he was a member of the United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday School and served on the Administrative Board. He was a member of Logan Lodge No. 490, F&AM of Altoona.

Mr. Mauk moved to North Carolina in July 2000. He was a member of Saint Andrew's By-the-Sea Episcopal Church and the Brotherhood of Saint Andrew's, Nags Head. He was a U.S. Navy veteran. He loved sailing and was a member of the Colington Yacht Club and the Cape Dory Sailboat Owners Association. He often helped other sailors deliver boats from New England, Florida and the Bahamas.

Surviving are his spouse of 24 years, Della; three sons, Craig and wife Valerie of Pennsylvania, Michael and wife Marlene of Georgia and Jeremy of Texas; Lori Mathews, who was like a daughter, and husband Tom; two grandchildren, Hayley and Travis of Pennsylvania; three sisters, Caralee Ciampoli and husband Paul, Trudy Nale and Nancy Swanger of Pennsylvania; a brother, Herbert and wife Joanne of Nevada; and nieces and nephews. Sisters, Nadine Kyle and Gloria Hall predeceased him.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday in Saint Andrew's By-the-Sea Episcopal Church by the Rev. Charles E.B. Gill. There will be no viewing.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to The Brotherhood of St. Andrews, P.O. Box 445, Nags Head, NC 27959 and the Outer Banks Cancer Support Group, 245 Woodlawn Drive, Kitty Hawk, NC 27949. Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, is handling arrangements.

WANCHESE -- Myrtle Gail Wescott McKinney, 50, died June 15, 2003. A funeral will be Wednesday at 11 a.m. in Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo.

COLERAIN -- James T. Raynor, 67, of the 300 block of Quebec Road, died June 14, 2003. A funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church, Colerain. Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor, is in charge.


Clarissa D. Waller
