She is survived by a sister, Rachel Smith; a special niece, Hilda, both of Norfolk; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at noon today at Queen Street Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Peter Wherry with burial in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Cross, 93, of the 100 block of Wilson St., died June 13, 2003 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. A native of Gates County, N.C., she was the widow of Daniel M. Cross and a former member of Stoney Branch Baptist Church, Gates, N.C. Survivors include four daughters, Helen Smith, Dorothy Faircloth, Delores Anderson and Gladys Cross, all of Portsmouth; four sons, James Boone of Salisbury, Md., Daniel I. Cross, Henry C. Cross and Edward A. Cross, all of Portsmouth; 34 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; 24 great-great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Irene Reid of Portsmouth; nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. A funeral will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in New First Baptist Church Taylorsville, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Marcus Brown. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. William Edwin Hinton PORTSMOUTH -- William E. ``Bill'' Hinton died peacefully June 18, 2003. He was born Jan. 1, 1912 in Gatesville, N.C. He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Elizabeth S. Hinton; son, William Edwin Hinton II of Portsmouth; brother, Guy and wife Elaine; sister, Mary Gill and husband Coleman; three grandsons, William III and wife Dawn, Russell and wife Robin and Brian and wife Rebecca; granddaughter, Dawn Thompson; seven great-grandchildren, Will, Landon, Anne-Taylor, Reid, Daryl, Brandon and Elizabeth; and nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Richard, Linwood and Elliott. He was a member of Port Norfolk Baptist Church, Tidal Wave No. 273, Portsmouth Scottish Rite, York Rite, Portsmouth Consistory, Tall Cedars of Lebanon and Khedive Temple. He was the oldest master in this 100 years of Tidal Wave Lodge. He was also a 33rd degree Scottish Rite Mason, past venerable master and served as secretary of his lodge for many years. He retired from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and he was a past member of Portsmouth City Council. A funeral will be conducted Friday at 10 a.m. in Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel, with the Rev. Don Sheffield officiating. Burial will follow in Olive Branch Cemetery. Masonic rites will be accorded. Aaron J. Truitt PORTSMOUTH -- Aaron Jackson ``Jack'' Truitt, 86, of the 100 block of Lynn Drive, died June 18, 2003, in his residence. A native of Aulander, N.C., he retired from the fire department in Fort Story in December of 1974 after 40 years of government service and was a courier supervisor for Central Fidelity Bank (now Wachovia) for more than 15 years. Mr. Truitt was a member of Park View Baptist Church for more than 62 years and served as a deacon. He was a member of the Portsmouth Civitan Club and was its president in 1975-1976. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife of more than 62 years, Margaret Bazemore Truitt; a daughter, Joyce T. Brennan and husband Richard of Herndon, Va.; a son, Frederick J. Truitt and wife Emma V. of Portsmouth; lifelong family friends, Rainell and Randy Rowell and their sons, Matthew and Andrew; three grandchildren, Courtenay Werner and husband Don of Portsmouth, Mark C. Brennan and Kate E. Brennan, both of Herndon; and three great-grandchildren, Shelby Faye Werner, Caroline Elizabeth Werner and James Avery Werner. A funeral will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Neal Sasser. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. Lane VIRGINIA BEACH -- Kathy Irene Lane, 51, of the 100 block of Shoreview Court, peacefully passed into eternal life and went to be with the Lord June 16, 2003. She was born in Bertie County, N.C. She leaves to cherish her memory three children: a son, Isaiah L. Stieff Jr.; two daughters, Sonja V. Stieff and Kathy C. Stieff; six sisters, a special sister, Kay ``Sis'' Haynes, Lois Moore, Mary Williams, Bessie Stewart, Joyce Rouse and Sylvia White; two brothers, Lloyd Lane and Raleigh Lane; and six grandchildren, LaQuan Stieff, Kee-Vonda Stieff, Brittany Stieff, LaDarius Stieff, LaQueisha Johnson and JaVona Johnson, all of Virginia Beach. She was predeceased by her mother, Rennie Lane, father John W. Lane, sister, Lucy Lane and three brothers, Rudolph Lane, Ernest Lane and Leon Lane. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, Harrellsville, N.C., with the Rev. Robert L. Lewis presiding. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Harrison III NAGS HEAD -- Robert Alexander ``Taylor'' Harrison III died June 17, 2003 at home surrounded by family and close friends. Taylor was born in Baltimore, Md., and was the founder and owner of Taylor Made Boats LLC in Nags Head and a member of St. Andrews By the Sea Episcopal Church. He was the son of the late Robert Alexander Taylor Harrison Jr. formerly of Southern Shores, N.C., and the late Nancy Crockett Harrison formerly of Middleburg, Va. Taylor is survived by his beloved children, Mallory Janice Harrison, 19, and Robert ``Alex'' Alexander Taylor Harrison IV, 15, both of Nags Head; his former wife, Elizabeth Payne of Southern Shores; his sister, Ann Rebecca Pierce Harrison of Point Richmond, Calif.; and brother, Jack Harrison of Pasadena, Md. Taylor was a longtime resident of the Outer Banks. He was a carpenter and boatwright who was dedicated to his family, friends and community. Though he has left this earth, his spirit will live on inside his loved ones and through his artistry. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. in St. Andrews By the Sea Episcopal Church by the Rev. Charles E.B. Gill. Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, is handling arrangements. MANTEO -- Helen D. Barr, 86, died June 16, 2003 in Nags Head. Mrs. Barr was born in New Jersey and was a homemaker and attended Roanoke Island Baptist Church. She was the daughter of the late Charles and Mildred Mausenzahl Kleespie and the wife of the late Fredman Barr. Surviving are her daughter, Sandra Rice of Manteo and son Charles Barr of Harbinger; her sister, Mary Patton of Toms River, N.J. and brother, John Kleespie of Waldwick, N.J.; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild. A funeral will be held today at 7 p.m. in Twiford's Colony Chapel by the Rev. John Charles. Memorial donations may be made to the Nags Head Volunteer Fire Dept.
HERTFORD -- James Charles Byrne, 70, of the 100 block of E. Camp Perry Road, died June 18, 2003 in his home. Born in Perth, Ontario, Canada, he was the son of the late Eleanor Baines and James Charles Byrne. He was retired from General Motors as senior project engineer and had served in the Canadian Air Force for two years. Survivors include his wife, Iris Ritchie Byrne; a daughter, Karen Fritts of Elizabeth City; a son, Stephen Byrne of Virginia Beach; and a grandson, Daniel Carnall. The family will receive friends today from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Swindell Funeral Home, Hertford. EDENTON -- Lizzie Pearce Perry, 93, of the 100 block of Beech Fork Road, died June 17, 2003 in Britthaven of Edenton. Mrs. Perry was born in Chowan County and was the daughter of the late William Henry and Hattie Bass Pearce. A homemaker, she was an active member of Rocky Hock Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday school for nearly 35 years. She also was a member of the Women's Missionary Society and had served as the GA director. For many years, Mrs. Perry was also a member of the Rocky Hock Home Demonstration Club. Preceded in death by her husband, Kermit L. Perry, she is survived by her daughter, Mary Alice Riddick and husband, Donald of Edenton; a sister, Delsie P. Miller of Winfall; a grandson, Perry Riddick and wife, Michelle and their daughters, Elizabeth and Molli of Edenton. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her brother, Edgar L. Pearce. A funeral will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in Rocky Hock Baptist Church by the Rev. Meredith Garrett. GATES -- Wilbur Elliott Rogers, 80, of the 1000 block of Drum Hill Road, died June 18, 2003 in Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie. Mr. Rogers was born in Dare County and was the son of the late James and Annie Beasley Rogers. A retired commercial fisherman, he was a veteran of World War II and had received the Purple Heart. Mr. Rogers is survived by his loving family which includes his wife, Mary Louise Farley Rogers; a daughter, Priscilla Shellito and husband, Robert of Suffolk; a son, Tim Rogers and wife, Elaine of Suffolk; a stepdaughter, Jean Sladek and husband, Jim of Suffolk; four stepsons, James Baker and wife, Susan of Knoxville, Tenn., Michael Brown and wife, Vonnie of Elizabeth City, Bruce Brown and wife, Sue of Edenton, and Joseph Strejcek of Newport News; three sisters, Kathleen Melosky and Brady Bridges, both of Kill Devil Hills and Nettie O'Neil of Nags Head; a brother, Sam Pete Rogers of Wanchese; eight grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren. A graveside service will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. in the Hill Top Cemetery in Colington, N.C. Friends may join the family Friday from 7 to 8 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, Gatesville, and all other times at the residence.
