Virginian-PilotJune 21, 2003Vinnie Overton CHESAPEAKE -- Vinnie Overton, 75, of the 3300 block of Indigo Road, died at her daughter's home in Portsmouth on June 20, 2003. She was a native of Bertie County, N.C. She is survived by her husband, Cecil Overton; a daughter, Eva Strain of Portsmouth; a son, William Overton of Chesapeake; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Charles Overton. A graveside service will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in Riverside Memorial Park by Keith Lewis. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4 to 5 p.m. at Graham Funeral Home, South Norfolk Chapel and at 69 Wyoming Ave., Portsmouth, at all other times. Friends may sign the guest register at www.grahamfuneralhome.com. Virginia P. Sharpe NORFOLK -- Virginia Paige Sharpe, 83, passed away June 18, 2003 in a local hospital. A native of Potecasi, N.C., Mrs. Sharpe retired from Versprille Hair Design as a hairdresser. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church in Norfolk and the widow of James C. Sharpe. She is survived by her daughter, Debra A. Norton and her husband Randy Norton of Williamsburg, Va.; two granddaughters, Tracy Bellamy and her husband Jim Bellamy of Camden, Del. and Leslie Haynes and her husband Dexter Haynes of Virginia Beach; and one great-grandchild, Noah Haynes of Virginia Beach. A funeral will be conducted today at 1 p.m. at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by the Rev. Mark Pullen. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter, 6268 St. Johns Wood, Williamsburg, Va. Rebecca B. Flesher PORTSMOUTH -- Rebecca Branton Flesher, born July 9, 1913 in Corapeake, N.C., died June 19, 2003 in Suffolk. Rebecca ``Becky'' Flesher passed away peacefully Thursday afternoon at Maryview Nursing Care Center. She will be remembered as a beautiful lady, gracious, cheerful and spirited, always spreading God-given joy and feelings of good will and love. She was raised in the country south of Suffolk, the daughter of Martin Burl and Louise Jane Branton of Corapeake and Cypress. She studied nursing and practiced it in Portsmouth and also in Maryland and New York. She married James H. ``Jim'' Flesher Jr. in 1950 and was a devoted wife and mother of two sons. The Flesher family moved to California in 1959 and then to Arlington in 1967. She and Jim returned to Portsmouth in 1989 and renewed old friendships quickly. Jim passed away in 1998 and Becky carried on courageously in spite of failing health. She is survived by sons, Tom and Martin; sister, Mary Edith Powell; and brother-in-law, Douglas Powell. Special gratitude to sister-in-law, Jane Branton and her children, Rebecca Ann, Cindy and Tommy who provided loving support during Becky's final weeks. Mom sang in her church choir and belonged to the Esther Sunday School Class at Port Norfolk Baptist. She played bridge with great enthusiasm and was an avid gardener and a member of the Portsmouth Music Study Club. Her special sparkle and charm will be celebrated and sincerely missed by everyone who knew her. Services will held at Port Norfolk Baptist Church, 401 Broad St., Portsmouth, VA 23707 on Monday at 11 a.m. by the Rev. Terry Taylor and Dr. Ector Hamrick, with interment at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Friends are invited to the house for refreshments afterwards. Cartwright ELIZABETH CITY -- Lina Mae Raper Cartwright, 83, of the 100 block of Brantwood Drive, died June 19, 2003. A funeral will be Sunday at 3 p.m. in Corinth Baptist Church. Twiford's Memorial Chapel is in charge. James M. Crotts Sr. ROANOKE RAPIDS -- James Monroe ``Monk'' Crotts Sr., 77, a native of Chesapeake, died Wednesday night in Obici Hospital with his family. He was a retired electrician from Norshipco. He is now joined again with his son, Roger Crotts, formerly of Chesapeake. Survivors include his brother, Robert Crotts of Roanoke Rapids; sister, Barbara Dobson of Chesterfield; his wife, Nancy Crotts of Chesapeake; daughters, Janie Weiss and Wanda Vanderburg of Suffolk, and Peggy Marshall; sons, James Crotts Jr., Andy Crotts and Mark Crotts, all of Chesapeake; 25 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. He was a wonderful father, grandfather and great-grandfather who was deeply loved and will be greatly missed. A graveside service will be held at 10 a.m. today at Merchants Hope Memorial Gardens in Hopewell, Va., with the Rev. Bobby Weiss officiating. Askew Funeral Services is handling arrangements. Madeline M. Dornacker KITTY HAWK -- Madeline Maino Dornacker, 69, died suddenly June 19, 2003 in Kitty Hawk. Mrs. Dornacker was born in Jersey City, N.J., and was a homemaker and a saint. She was a Baptist and participated in the Agape Womens Bible Study and Tres Dias Community of New Jersey. She was an active sports fan attending her grandchildren's sporting events from North Carolina to New Jersey. She was the daughter of the late Joseph and Jean Sutowski Maino and the beloved wife of Fred Dornacker of Kitty Hawk. She was a loving mother. Survivors include her children, Susan McCullough of Forked River, N.J., Sherryl Shay McDaniels of Brick, N.J., Donna Voyovich of Kitty Hawk, Diane Shuster of Moyock, and Danny Dornacker of Brick, N.J.; two sisters, Lorraine Sanders of North Lauderdale, Fla., and Joan Maino of California; two brothers, Michael Maino of Forked River and Richard Maino of Punta Gorda, Fla.; and 18 grandchildren. A funeral will be held Tuesday at 11 a.m. in Lighthouse Christian Fellowship by the Rev. Brady McDaniels and the Rev. Clinton Hardee with burial in Laurel Memorial Gardens in Grandy, N.C.
