Virginian-PilotJune 24, 2003Marvin A. Creason NORFOLK -- Marvin Andrew ``Jack'' Creason, 83, died peacefully at home on June 21, 2003. He was a native of Cooleemee, N.C., and retired from the U.S. Army in 1959 as a master sergeant and also retired from Sentry Services. He was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church of Norfolk, American Legion Post No. 0054, and was a veteran of World War II and Korea. Mr. Creason was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Annie Lee Creason. He is survived by two sons, Harold W. Creason and his wife, Linda, of Norfolk and Haul W. Carnes and his wife, Loretta, of Alabama; one sister, Alene Alexander of Kannapolis, N.C.; one brother, Grimes Creason of Mocksville, N.C.; seven grandchildren, Christopher Andrew Creason, Amanda Long, Shannon Long, Kelly Harris, Scott Carnes, Kristi Kay and Tracey Fuls; and many great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by the Rev. Fred Braswell. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Gardens. Elizabeth Matusiak-Allen PORTSMOUTH -- Elizabeth Josephine Matusiak-Allen, 78, died June 20, 2003, at her daughter's home in Sugar Land, Texas. Mrs. Allen, a native of Caswell County, N.C., was a former resident of Portsmouth. She was the widow of Thomas C. Matusiak (1972) and William A. Allen (1987). She was retired from General Electric Co., and was a Catholic. Survivors include two daughters, Catherine Nethery of St. Petersburg, Fla., Frances Magelssen of Sugar Land; three sons, Michael Matusiak and James L. Matusiak, both of Portsmouth, Thomas C. Matusiak Jr. of Las Vegas; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, Clyde Watson Sr. of Roxboro, N.C. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday in St. Paul's Catholic Church by the Rev. Joseph Slowik. Burial will follow in Portsmouth Catholic Cemetery. Harrell WOODLAND -- Myrtle Howard Harrell, 102, died Saturday, June 22, 2003, at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie. Mrs. Harrell was born in Bertie County, N.C., a daughter of the late Joe Howard and Mattie Howard. She was a nurse and a member of Woodland United Methodist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Marjorie Futrell Gardner of Norfolk; granddaughter, Genny Gayle Majette and husband Richard Lee Majette of Virginia Beach; grandson, Charles C. Gardner and wife Carol J. Gardner of Richmond; great-grandchildren, Michele Zayicek and husband Jon Zayicek, Holly Plank and husband Marty Plank, Ryan Charles Gardner and Grant Alexander Gardner; and a great-great-granddaughter, Olivia Zayicek. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. today in Garrett Funeral Home, Ahoskie, with the Rev. Frank Drake officiating. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. today at the funeral home. BELVIDERE -- Elva C. Chappell, 90, of the 1200 block of County Line Road, died June 23, 2003, in Britthaven of Edenton. Mrs. Chappell was born in Perquimans County and was the daughter of the late George W. and Rachel C. Chappell. A homemaker, she was a member of Christ Sanctified Holiness Church. Preceded in death by her husband, Percy Edward Chappell and her son, Edward Lee Chappell, she is survived by five daughters, Imogene C. Dail of Carrollton, Va., Jeanette C. Nixon and husband Thomas of Edenton, Joanne C. Pippins and husband John of Belvidere, June Paige Cox and husband Ray of Belvidere and Judy Perry and husband Alan of Edenton; a daughter-in-law, Nancy W. Chappell of Belvidere; three sisters, Cora Mae Copeland of Tyner, Irene Byrum and Eunice Boyce, both of Hertford; 25 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Miller Funeral Home, Edenton, by the Rev. Donald Sawyer. Burial will follow in the Chappell Family Cemetery near the home. EDENTON -- Anna Bowen Goodwin, 77, of the 100 block of Robin Lane, died Monday, June 23, 2003, in her home. Mrs. Goodwin was born in Washington County and was the daughter of the late Luther L. and Nell Wilson Bowen. She had retired from the Washington County Health Dept., and was a member of Edenton Baptist Church, the Edenton BPW, the Edenton Historical Society, the Edenton Woman's Club, the Chowan County Horticultural Society, and was an active supporter of the Chowan County 4-H programs. Preceded in death by her husbands, Raymond B. Smith and Murray L. Goodwin, and a sister, Janet Lilley, she is survived by a daughter, Carol Gardner and husband Tom of Cartersville, Ga.; two sons, Melbourne ``Scooter'' Smith and wife Elise, and Scott Smith and wife Glenda, all of Plymouth; two sisters, Laura McNair of Plymouth and Betty Jo Phelps of Roanoke, Va.; two brothers, Luther Bowen of Plymouth and John M. Bowen of Olathe, Kan.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday in Edenton Baptist Church by Dr. Paul Pridgen and the Rev. Jimmy Hagwood. BELHAVEN -- William Bryon ``Bill'' Tate, 59, of the 200 block of Pungo View Road, died June 21, 2003. Mr. Tate was born July 2, 1943 in Beaufort County. He was the son of the late David S. Tate and Lucy Cornelius Tate. On Dec. 23, 1961 he married Dolores Marie Hooper who survives. Together they had eight children: four daughters and four sons. Three children have preceded him in death, newborn Elizabeth Ann Tate and sons, David L. Tate and Michael A. Tate, both lost at sea in 1987. He was a member of Mother of Mercy Catholic Church, a member of the Board of Directors of the Southern Bank and the North Carolina Fisheries Association. Surviving their father are daughters, Theresa Tate Smith and husband Art Smith, Rebecca Tate Guy and husband Gregory Guy and Mary Tate and sons, Christopher Tate and Matthew Tate. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Austin Tate, Nicholas Tate, Sara Tate, Katie Tate, Sydney Guy, Camden Guy and Zoe Annmarie Guy; sisters, Dorothy Daniels, Gladys Kirk, Julia Respass, Joyce Daniels and Lorene Tetterton and brothers, Mitchell Tate, Walter Tate, Lawrence Tate, Lloyd Tate and Lindsay Tate. He was predeceased by a brother, Joseph Tate. A good and loving husband, father, grandfather, son and brother, he will also be remembered as an enthusiastic commercial fisherman, who enjoyed working hard at his profession. The family will join friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. today at Hillside
Funeral Service, 4500 Highway 264 East, Washington and other times at
the home. A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at
Mother of Mercy with Father Arturo Cabra officiating. Burial will follow
in the Tate Family Cemetery, Wright's Creek, Belhaven. David Crosby, Johnny
Daniels, Tommy Kirk, Ty Ormond, Steven Tate and Sam Tate will serve as
