Virginian-PilotJune 25, 2003Gladys H. Tarkington CHESAPEAKE -- Gladys Hanbury Tarkington, 90, died in a local hospital June 22, 2003. She was born on her family's farm in the Hickory area of Norfolk County in 1912 to Benjamin Franklin Hanbury and Bertha Williams Hanbury. She was the widow of Hassell Shucker Tarkington. The Tarkingtons resided in Hickory and in Creswell and Plymouth, N.C., in the early years of their marriage. They returned to Hickory in 1951. Mrs. Tarkington assisted her husband in the development of several parcels of land in the Hickory area including the Hickory Ridge subdivision. She was a lifelong member of Centerville Baptist Church and was active in the Women's Missionary Society, the Sunday School and the Centerville Senior Citizens. Her great-grandparents were charter members of the church when it was organized in 1872. Mrs. Tarkington is survived by a son, Luther A. Hobbs and wife Evelyn and a daughter, Caredwyn T. Harris and husband Richard of Chesapeake; three grandchildren, Mark Hobbs and wife Susan of Chesapeake, Kent Harris of Atlanta, Ga., and Lori Harris of Chesapeake; a sister, Doris H. Mangrum of Chesapeake; a sister-in-law, Elizabeth B. Hanbury of Chesapeake; and eight nieces and nephews. She had two brothers, Lawrence J. Hanbury Sr. and Thomas B. Hanbury and a sister, Ella Mae H. Bateham, who predeceased her. A funeral honoring her life will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Twiford Colonial Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd., with the Rev. David Shelton officiating. Interment will follow in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Annie P. Holden NORFOLK -- Annie P. Holden, 59, was rescued by an angel of mercy on the early morning of June 21, 2003. Annie was born to Hattie and the late Buddy Phillips on Oct. 19, 1943 in Wilson, N.C. where she also attended public school. In 1984, she relocated to Norfolk to live near her daughter Mary, where she resided until the Lord called her home. She accepted Christ at an early age and in 2000 she rededicated her life to Christ. She leaves to cherish her memory her children, Doretha Braswell of Rocky Mount, N.C., Mary Adams (Adarian) of Chesapeake, Linda Rodriguez (Norway), Fannie Gloux and Robert Holden Jr. (Melissa), all of Rocky Mount and Lina Griffin (Randy) of District Heights, Md.; 15 grandchildren; four sisters, Geraldine, Lucille, Mary (Dean) and Bessie Mae; two brothers, Bruh and Willie (Uncle Piggy); and a host of other relatives and friends, among them a very special friend, Mr. Willie Watson. A wake will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Metropolitan Funeral Service, Granby Street Chapel. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Hamilton Funeral Chapel & Gardens, Wilson, N.C. Williams NORFOLK -- Catherine Askew Williams, 82, of the 700 block of Elizabeth River Circle, died June 20, 2003. A native of Elizabeth City, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Zion and Louise Askew. Survivors include her husband, Elmer M. Williams; a daughter, Aguila Melody Williams; and two grandsons, Edward D. Williams and Jordan Lee Williams. A funeral will be held Friday at noon in Garretts Community Baptist Church, 2843 Victoria Ave., Norfolk, by Bishop Johnnie L. Reid. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Jordan Brown SUFFOLK -- Jordan Cleveland ``JC'' Brown Jr. of the 100 block of Byrd St. passed away June 24, 2003. A native of Northampton County, N.C., he was a member of Suffolk Christian Church and the Isaac Walton League. A retired meat cutter, he was the son of the late Jordan C. Brown Sr. and Lillie Lassiter Brown. He was also predeceased by a grandson, Dennis Ray Davis. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Josie Davis Brown; two daughters, Wanda Brown Wyatt and husband Glenn of Downey, Calif., and Betty Brown Schnur of Suffolk; two sons, Parker L. Davis and wife Beverly of Roanoke Rapids, N.C., and William ``Tim'' Brown of Suffolk; a sister, Nancy Brown Blalock of Richmond, Va.; three brothers, C. Holland Brown and Collin Brown, both of Franklin, Va., and Richard Brown of Kinston, N.C.; and his beloved grandson, Travis Schnur. A graveside service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. in Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, Suffolk. SNUG HARBOR -- Hazel Virginia Detmer, 86, of the 100 block of Juniper St., died late Monday night, June 23, 2003 in her sleep at Brian Center Nursing Facility and went home to be with the Lord. Hazel's life was her husband, Bert Detmer, who passed away in 1992 and her family in the most traditional manner. She was always there for them and often helped them through many tough circumstances. Always putting others first, she enjoyed serving rather than receiving and rarely complained even when she was in great discomfort as with her recent sickness. She resided with her son, Paul Detmer since Bert's death and often accompanied him on his rural paper route as she did for the last time June 4, 2003. Spiritually she was a member of Plymouth Brethren of Portsmouth. Charitably she belonged to and assisted local extension efforts and entertained members in her home. She gave regularly to many charities including cancer and heart funds as well as the poor and needy. Survivors include daughter, Lillie Ricucci of Hampton; three sons, Donald Detmer and wife Becky of Chesapeake, Paul Detmer and Keith and wife Tami Detmer, all of Hertford; seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Viewing will be held with family present from 7 to 8 p.m. today at Swindell Funeral Home, 509 Dobbs St., Hertford. Graveside services will be held at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, 4569 Shoulders Hill Road, in the Bennett's Creek area of Suffolk at 1 p.m. Thursday, after which those attending may talk with the family.

SOUTHERN SHORES -- Jean Ellen Abplanalp Snow, 72, died Dec. 26, 2002 at Inova Fairfax Hospital. Born Dec. 13, 1930 in Fairmont, Minn., Jean had lived in the Hampton Roads area, Vero Beach, Fla., and Cary and Duck, N.C. She taught English at Woodrow Wilson and Churchland high schools in Portsmouth and worked for Twiddy and Co. Realtors in Duck as their cottage rental manager. She retired in 1994. She was well loved by many and ill be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her children, Jane Criscoe Koch of Montclair, Va., Ro Criscoe Moore of Suffolk, John David Criscoe of Ridgeland, Miss., and Randy Criscoe of Champaign, Ill.; her grandchildren, Adam and Eric Koch, Stacy Hearn and Belinda, Kimberly and Laurie Criscoe; a brother, Jim Abplanalp of Raleigh, N.C.; a sister, Patricia Thomson of Littleton, Colo.; and three nieces and three nephews. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 27, 2003 at 6 p.m. in Baum Senior Center, 300 Mustian St., Kill Devil Hills, N.C.
