James E. Green Sr.

CHESAPEAKE -- James E. Green Sr. was called home to rest on May 31, 2003. Our dearly beloved husband, father, brother, uncle and granddaddy. He was born in Hertford, N.C., to the late Charlie Hurdel and Ethelmae Green. He was preceded in death by his grandson, James E. Green III.

To cherish his memory a loving wife, Lynette Green; two sons, James E. Green Jr. and Larry Green; four daughters, Rebecca Jeffery, Sandra Evans, Sherry Fair and Josie Williams, all of Chesapeake; a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.

A funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Prayer and Deliverance Center, 3235 Granby St., with Bishop John T. Reid officiating. Interment will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park. Family and friends are asked to assemble 2509 Berkley Avenue, Chesapeake, one hour prior to the service for the procession to the church. Florence J. Reavis

PORTSMOUTH -- Florence Johnson Reavis, 83, of Kirby Street, died June 2, 2003 in Norfolk.

She was born Sept. 25, 1919, in Henderson, N.C., to Susan Myrick Johnson and John Melton Johnson. She was married to Maurice Willard Reavis for over 50 years until his death in 1992. Two sons, Robert Harvey Reavis and John Maurice Reavis and three brothers, Frank D. Johnson, John M. Johnson Jr. and James Gilbert Johnson, predeceased her.

Florence was a beautician at Helene's Beauty Salon on Middle Street for many years and subsequently retired from The Little Beauty Shoppe in Churchland. She was a faithful member of Highland Baptist Church for 54 years where she taught a children's Sunday school class.

Mrs. Reavis is survived by a daughter, Janice R. Seager and her husband, Edward, of Hillsborough, N.J.; a daughter-in-law, Beth Reavis; four grandchildren, Sarah Seager, Benjamin Seager and wife Tara, Jennifer Reavis and Joshua Reavis; a great-grandchild, Daniel Seager; two sisters, Myrtle J. Bolling of Norfolk and Dorothy J. Pennypacker of Virginia Beach; as well as several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Kevin Wilson. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Carma C. Sawyer

PORTSMOUTH -- Carma Cooper Sawyer, 90, of Greenland Blvd., died June 2, 2003 in Portsmouth.

A native of Tyrell County, N.C., she was predeceased by her husband, William Lawson Sawyer. Mrs. Sawyer retired from the Navy Exchange in Portsmouth as a manager and was a member of Community United Methodist Church, Portsmouth.

Survivors include her son, Russell Sawyer and wife Mary Ann of Chesapeake; a daughter, Sandra Bright of Suffolk; three grandchildren, Hope Prather, Joyce Barker and Jim Stevens Jr.; and several great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel, by the Rev. Steve Bingham. Burial will be in Olive Branch Cemetery. The family will receive friends an hour prior to the service on Wednesday. The family suggests donations to the Alzheimer's Association, No. 20 Koger Executive Center, Norfolk, VA 23506 or Community United Methodist Church, 37 Cherry Road, Portsmouth, VA 23701.

Ed A. Hiestand III

RODANTHE -- Ed Alexander Hiestand III, 44, died May 15, 2003. A memorial service will be in Elizabethan Gardens, Manteo, at 9 a.m. June 11. Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, is in charge.


Margie D. Askew

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. -- Margie Dale Askew died May 31, 2003. A funeral will be held Friday at 1 p.m. in Metropolitan Interdenominational Church of God, Aulander, N.C. Wilder's Funeral Home, Aulander, is in charge.
