Virginian-PilotJune 5, 2003 NORFOLK -- Virginia Royal Austin (Lee), 85, died June 3, 2003. Born in Beaufort, N.C., she was the daughter of the late John F. Austin and Thomas Ann ``Nannie'' Willis Austin. Virginia was predeceased by her husband, Ulys Lee of Morehead City, N.C. She is survived by her daughters, Marjorie Eileen Lee Williams and husband Leroy of Norfolk and Johnise Ann Lee Gillikin and husband Bobby of Charleston, S.C.; nine grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and many friends and relatives in Beaufort, N.C. Virginia graduated in 1934 from Beaufort High School. She married September 23, 1934 and worked as a sales lady all her working career and retired in 1972. Virginia made her home with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Williams in Norfolk. Burial of Virginia's ashes will be in a family plot in Ocean View Cemetery, Beaufort, N.C. at a later date. Matilda S. Freeman NORFOLK -- Matilda S. Freeman, of the 2700 block of Virginia Beach Blvd., died June 1, 2003. She was a member of First Baptist Church, Bute Street, Missionary Society, Bute Street, National Education Association, Tutoring Program Americorp and the Sorority of National Phi Delta Kappa Inc. She received her BA from Elizabeth City State University, her MA at Columbia University in New York City and her certification to teach gifted children. Survivors include her two daughters, Doris Smith and Ruby J. Millsap; a sister, Mignon Jenkins; brother, James Hedgebeth; three great-grandchildren, Christopher and Theodore Payne and Donte Harrell; four grandchildren, Lauren Smith, Melody Harris, Stephen Smith and Lonnie Millsap; a niece, Felecia Randle; and stepchildren. A funeral will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. in First Baptist Church, Bute Street by the Rev. Robert Murray. Burial will be Saturday at noon in Vine Oak Cemetery, Edenton, N.C. Mary Spain-Valentine NORFOLK -- Mary Elizabeth Spain-Valentine, 67, went to be with the Lord May 29, 2003. She was a native of Greenville, N.C. and the daughter of the late John and Hattie Spain of Greenville. At an early age Mary and her family moved to Norfolk. While living in Norfolk, Mary attended Norfolk Public Schools. She was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Valentine is survived by her husband, Robert H. Valentine Sr. of Norfolk; four children, Olivia Spain, Murray Spain, Frank Jefferson all of Norfolk and Diane Ferebee of New York; stepson, Robert H. Valentine of California; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; nine brothers and sisters, Arthur Spain and Walter Spain of Pennsylvania, Andrew Spain of Chesapeake, Charles Spain of Norfolk, Murray Spain of Boston, Mass., Annie Lee Smith, Vera Mae Beverly both of Norfolk, Doris Miles of Chesapeake and Cora Butler of Bridgeport, R.I.; also a host of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three brothers, Willie Spain, Rufus Spain and John Spain Jr. as well as her daughter, Louise McDonald, Anthony Jefferson and Wayne Spain. Mrs. Lawson was born in Hertford County, N.C., a daughter of the late Ledie Brinkley and Lou Overton Brinkley. She had been a beautician for 55 years and was a member of Brook Baptist Church, Sub-Vets and the Pearl Harbor Survivors. Mrs. Lawson was predeceased by her husband, Larry Wyman Lawson. Surviving are a daughter, Sharon L. Pflueger and husband, Steve of Virginia Beach; sons, William Cooke of Norfolk, Stevie Burlas of North Carolina, Tony Martinette of Virginia Beach and Barry Martinette and wife, Brenda, of Portsmouth; brother, Sam Brinkley of Ahoskie, N.C.; sisters, Shirley B. Memorials may be sent to the American Cancer Society or to the Alzheimer's Foundation. Alice T. Beamon SUFFOLK -- On Monday, June 2, 2003, Alice Ruth Tyler Beamon departed this life. Alice was born April 28, 1923. At an early age she joined Parker's Grove Baptist Church in Mapleton, N.C., where she remained a faithful member until moving to Suffolk. After raising her children and grandchildren, she went on to pursue a career in the nursing profession. She was preceded in death by her husband, George T. Beamon Sr.; her parents, Odell and Will Tyler; brothers, Maryland, Leo, Charles, Eddie and Spurgeon; and sister, Lulabelle. She is survived by a brother, Luther Howard Tyler and wife, Helen of Upper Marlboro, Md.; five children, Carolyn Tyler Beamon of Suffolk and Johnnie Tyler and wife, Deborah of Norfolk, James Tyler, George T. Beamon Jr. and Randolph Beamon and wife, Gloria of New York City; devoted grandchildren, Tonya Gary and husband, Kevin of College Park, Md. and Adrian Skinner of Suffolk; and a host of adoring grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins.
