Virginian-PilotJune 6, 2003 CHESAPEAKE -- Roy Donell ``Don'' Phillips, 56, of Hearndon Court, went home to be with his Savior and Lord Wednesday, June 4, 2003, surrounded by his loving family. Born in Roanoke Rapids, N.C., he was the son of Roy H. and Bea A. Phillips of Roanoke Rapids. Don was a graduate of Roanoke Rapids High School and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a certified energy services engineer. He came to Chesapeake as a teacher at Oscar Smith High School where he taught math for four years. After working at Dominion Virginia Power in energy services for 27 years, he retired and returned to teaching math at Great Bridge High School. He was a faithful member of Great Bridge Baptist Church where he served as a deacon and was a Sunday school teacher for many years. Besides his parents, Mr. Phillips is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Karen Korbach Phillips of Chesapeake; one daughter, Jill Phillips Gullahorn and husband Andy of Nashville, Tenn.; one son, Matthew Scott Phillips of Chesapeake; one grandson, Andrew Phillips Gullahorn of Nashville; a special mother-in-law, Jo Jane Korbach of Black Mountain, N.C.; one sister, Linda Phillips Overton and husband Marshall of Roanoke Rapids; two brothers, Timothy Lee Phillips of Roanoke Rapids and Mark Anthony Phillips and wife LuAnne of Greenville, N.C.; as well as three nephews, James Korbach, Jonathan Overton and Austin Phillips; three nieces, Chelsea Korbach, Scout Korbach and Lauren Phillips; and many friends. The funeral to celebrate his life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Great Bridge Baptist Church, 621 S. Battlefield Blvd., with the Rev. Charles L. Moseley officiating. Dora Jones NORFOLK -- Dora Jones, 81, of the 2600 block of Chesapeake Blvd., departed this life on June 2, 2003 at 11 p.m. Dora was the daughter of the late Isaac and Helen Bailey. She was born in Northampton County, Va. on March 2, 1922. At an early age, she confessed Christ. Dora was a faithful member of St. Paul CME Church for many years. She was a choir member, past Usher Board member and a member of the Missionary Board. Dora was married to the late James Jones of Sunbury, N.C. With the resolve of a determined soul, she was a providing and dedicated wife, a loving mother to their son and a caring grandmother. To many, she was a friend and to all she was a role model. We know not what emotions stirred her soul, nor what secret communion she might have made with God, but we do know our God never makes a mistake. We are totally unable to describe the void that has been cast upon us. We cannot change the Divine Law, but we can face the days ahead with courage, thankful for all the joys that we shared with our loved one. Dora leaves to cherish her fond memory one son, Michael Jones; four sisters, Rosie Baines, Mary Holmes, Helen Williams of Exmore, Va. and Fannie Harmon of Florida; four brothers, Henry Edwards of Exmore, Isaac Edwards of Maryland, Frank Edwards and Charlie Edwards of Florida; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Gatling PORTSMOUTH -- Charlie Elbert Gatling, 68, of the 500 block of Bunche Blvd., died May 28, 2003 at home. A native of Sunbury, N.C., he retired as an aviation mechanic from Norfolk Naval Rework Facility after 26 years and was a member of New First Baptist Church Taylorsville, Portsmouth. He was a U.S. Army veteran, member of the Greenleaf Male Chorus of Virginia Beach for two years and was a member of the Fisherman's Club. Survivors include two sisters, Barbara G. Ormond (Matthew) of Virginia Beach and Sarah G. Walker of Portsmouth; two aunts, one uncle, nieces, nephews, cousins, in-laws and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Annie Jordan Gatling and Charlie Eugene Gatling; and a sister, Dorothy G. Lee. A funeral will be held today at 1 p.m. in Brighton Rock AME Zion Church, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Clifford Barnett and the Rev. William Eason. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake, with military honors. The family will be at 1608 Stratford St., Portsmouth, and will assemble there for the procession to the church. Irene B. Jones SUFFOLK -- Irene Baines Jones, 95, died June 4, 2003. A native of Seaboard, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Richard Ashton Baines and Josie Mae Stephenson. She was also predeceased by her grandson, Paul B. Purcell; brothers, Rufus Ashton Baines Sr. and Richard Edward Baines Sr.; and nephew, Richard Henry Baines. She was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church where she attended the Ladies Adult Sunday School class and was also former hostess for the church. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law, Vernon E. Jones Jr. and Ethel Jones of Suffolk; nieces, Joyce B. Riddick, Emily Faye McKinney and Nancy B. White; and nephews, Rufus A. Baines Jr. and Richard E. Baines Jr. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Parr Funeral Home by the Rev. Charles W. Thompson. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Black HERTFORD -- Reginald L. ``Stubby'' ``Tonnage'' Black of the 200 block of Tranquility Lane, passed away Wednesday, June 4, 2003 in Palliative Care at the Hampton V.A. Hospital. A native of Gastonia, N.C., he was a member of St. John Masonic Lodge No. 1, Portsmouth, N.H. and the Scottish Rite Bodies of Norfolk. He was a graduate of Belmont High School in North Carolina and received an associate's degree from Tidewater Community College. He is survived by his wife, Frances A. Black; a son, Roy Ernest Black and his wife Cheryl; his mother, Edna M. Faurot; a sister, Donna Rhea Ingle; a brother, Charles Anthony Black; two grandchildren, Sarah Jean Ianno and Joseph L. Black; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his daughter, Saundra Louise Black. A funeral will be conducted at 7 p.m. Saturday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, by the Rev. Robert Gilman and Ms. Sam Trent. ELIZABETH CITY -- Marie Mooney Carawan, 90, of Woodstock III, and formerly of Hyde County, died June 5, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City. Born in Fairfield, N.C., April 12, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Clifton and Beda Hudson Mooney. She was first married to Thomas H. Dawson who died in 1942; following his death, she was married to Hubert C. Cahoon who died in 1964; and she then married Irven Emmett Carawan who died in 1990. Surviving are two daughters, Hannah D. Pierce of Hertford and Dorothy D. Gibbs of Suffolk; two stepsons, Edward ``Bunk'' Carawan of Swan Quarter and Wilbur ``Bill'' Carawan of Fairfield; a stepdaughter, Metta Austin of Manteo; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Mrs. Carawan was preceded in death by two brothers, Lindsey Mooney and Clifton Mooney Jr. and a sister, Dorothy Lee Mooney. A funeral will be held at the Carawan family plot in Soule Cemetery, Swan Quarter, Saturday at 11 a.m. George W. Bondurant of Elizabeth City will officiate. HATTERAS -- Ida Willis West O'Neal, 99, died June 4, 2003 in Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City. She was born in Hatteras to the late Charlie H. and Mary Alice Gaskins Willis and was the widow of John L. West and Milon O'Neal. Mrs. O'Neal was a member of the Hatteras Assembly of God Church. She is survived by two daughters, Marion Vella of Corpus Christi, Texas and Martha W. Quidley of Hatteras; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Charlie W. West. A funeral will be conducted Monday at 2 p.m. in the Hatteras Assembly of God Church. Burial will follow in the Odom Family Cemetery.
