LetsVPN vs Astrill: Which Survives Real Work in China?
LetsVPN vs Astrill for mainland China in 2026. Speed, reliability, the April outage, and which one fits your actual workload.
Astrill and LetsVPN are the two consumer VPNs people inside mainland China actually use, for opposite reasons. Astrill is the premium expat default with a decade-long track record and a price that reflects it. LetsVPN is the cheap, simple, Chinese-Canadian-operated workhorse that survived years of enforcement until April 2026, when it did not.
This is the honest head-to-head, with no affiliate dressing. Both are usable for different jobs. Neither is a serious answer for business-grade work, and that distinction matters more than the brand argument.

The short answer
Astrill is the right pick for an individual expat or remote worker who wants the highest-survival consumer VPN, accepts the price, and has a backup ready for the days the apps fail. LetsVPN is the right pick for casual personal use, messaging, social media, and light browsing, at roughly a tenth of the cost, with the understanding that it can vanish for a month with no warning.
Neither is the right pick for a team, an office, a sustained workday of video calls, or anyone whose income depends on the tunnel staying up. That is a different category of product.
Astrill, in 2026
Astrill has been the default expat recommendation in China for over a decade. The product runs StealthVPN, a proprietary obfuscation layer on top of OpenVPN, plus OpenWeb for lighter browsing. The team rotates infrastructure aggressively and pushes app updates within hours of major enforcement waves. That operational discipline is the real product.
Pricing in 2026 lands above twenty dollars per month with the VIP add-ons most users end up needing for usable speeds. The standard plan runs slower than the marketing suggests, and the VIP routes are where the actual differentiation lives. We could not find a published independent audit of Astrill's no-logs claim, which matters more for users with sensitive work than for the average traveller.
The 2026 picture is messier than the historical reputation. Recent reports on r/chinalife describe Astrill as inconsistent on desktop and unreliable on Android in particular. Independent benchmarks show speeds falling 46 to 50 percent on nearby servers compared to a year earlier. The connection still gets through more often than most competitors during a sensitive week; the workday around it is harder than it used to be.

LetsVPN, in 2026
LetsVPN runs on Shadowsocks with aggressive IP rotation. The app is simple, often free of frills, and the price sits at roughly six to seven dollars per month on the long plans. It has been the default cheap pick for personal use in China for years and remains popular with travellers and students who do not need work-grade reliability.
The technical limits are real. Shadowsocks is increasingly detectable by modern DPI; survival depends on the rotation churn, not on the protocol's resistance. Device limits are two per account. The service is Chinese-Canadian operated, which is a different privacy posture than a Western-jurisdiction VPN, and that matters for users in sensitive situations.
When LetsVPN works it is fine for casual browsing, messaging, mail, and most social media. It is not fine for sustained video calls or large file transfers under load, and that has been true for years before the April incident.
The April outage and what it means
The single most important data point about LetsVPN in 2026 is the outage from 8 April through 9 May. The service was completely down for thirty days during a sustained network-blocking campaign. The official blog announcement on 8 May confirmed service resumption and full subscription compensation for the affected period. Service is back, the team handled it reasonably, and active subscriptions were credited.
What that incident reveals about the product, not the team, is the part to weigh. A consumer VPN that runs on cheap shared Shadowsocks infrastructure can lose access for a month with no warning when the enforcement environment tightens. The technical reason is that the underlying nodes and IP pools take time to rebuild when they are burned faster than they can be rotated. A premium-routed service with its own private path does not have the same failure mode, because it does not depend on the same pool.
The takeaway is not that LetsVPN is dishonest. The takeaway is that the product class is fragile, and a backup is not optional. If a thirty-day outage would damage your work, this product class is the wrong primary.
The wider pattern of 2026 enforcement is covered in the China VPN crackdown brief.
Head-to-head
| Property | Astrill | LetsVPN |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing | Premium ($20+ with usable VIP add-ons) | Cheap ($6 to $7/month on long plans) |
| Core protocol | StealthVPN (OpenVPN + obfuscation) | Shadowsocks with IP rotation |
| Peak-hour speed inside China | 5 to 20 Mbps on standard plans | 5 to 15 Mbps when up |
| Packet loss at peak | 6 to 15% | 8 to 20% |
| Devices per account | Higher on VIP, otherwise modest | 2 |
| Reliability through a sensitive week | Strongest of the consumer VPNs, declining | Vulnerable, demonstrated by the April outage |
| Audit / privacy posture | No independent audit | Chinese-Canadian operated, less defensible for sensitive work |
| Support quality | Fast updates, weak personal troubleshooting | Limited, primarily app-based |
| Best workload | Light remote work, expat daily life | Casual personal access, messaging, social |
| Worst workload | Office video calls, sustained team use | Anything where a 30-day outage would hurt |
Honest framing: these are both consumer-grade. The right comparison is which consumer trade-offs fit you, not which one is "best." For business-grade work the comparison is between either of them and a premium-routed service, not between the two of them.
Which one to pick
For an individual expat who values the highest-survival consumer VPN and is willing to pay, Astrill remains the strongest pick despite the 2026 decline. Have a backup installed and configured before arrival; do not depend on it as a single tunnel.
For a traveller, student, or casual remote worker whose connection is for messaging, social media, occasional video calls and light browsing, LetsVPN is fine and dramatically cheaper. Plan around the possibility of another outage. Keep a second service installed.
If your workload is sustained video calls, large international uploads, or a team's daily work, the honest answer is that neither product class is enough. Premium routing, a modern stealth protocol, and active operations are not features the consumer tier offers at any price; they are a different category.

The protocol-level reasons the consumer tier collapses under load are in the best protocol for China explainer. For travellers, expats and teams whose work in mainland China does not survive a thirty-day outage or a steady evening packet loss above ten percent, Throughwire runs on CN2 GIA premium routing with VLESS-Reality and Hysteria2 to hold the workday open, including the 9 p.m. window: in our data for the 30 days to 19 October 2026, everyday working speed during the evening peak held at 98 to 100 percent of the daytime level (our network stats page).
