Why your speed might be lower than expected
A short checklist for diagnosing where the bottleneck actually is, before you reach out to support.
Throughwire is designed to deliver between 100 and 500 Mbps from inside China. If you are seeing less than that, the bottleneck is almost always one of three things.
1. Your local network
Run a Wi-Fi speed test directly to your router (not over the VPN). If that is already slow, the issue is between your device and the router, not Throughwire.
A few common causes:
- The device is far from the router or behind walls.
- The 2.4 GHz band is congested in dense apartment buildings. Switch to 5 GHz where available.
- A wired Ethernet connection always outperforms Wi-Fi for sustained transfers.
2. Your local internet provider
Once you have ruled out Wi-Fi, run a normal speed test (without Throughwire connected). The result is your ceiling. We cannot route faster than your underlying connection.
If your home or office line is rated for 100 Mbps, your real-world Throughwire speed will be at or near that ceiling, not above it.
3. The destination service
If a specific app or site is slow but everything else feels fast, the bottleneck is on the other end. Some services rate-limit connections from VPN-style ranges. Try a comparable service to confirm.
Still slow?
If none of the above explains it, contact us with:
- Your city
- The Throughwire client version
- The result of a speed test, ideally from speedtest.net or fast.com
- The specific apps or sites that feel slow
We will look at the route and respond within one business day.
